I have a business where I've installed a axis camera system with a few cameras. In the workplace itself its fine, the wireless connection can manage all the cameras' live feeds at high frame rate and no compression, however when I sit at home and connect through an internet connection the quality is very poor and frame rate less than three. I know it's because I have shaped lines and which is 384kbps at work and 4096kbps at home, both uncapped. This is why I wondered if anyone can help me with information about a less expensive wireless option and hardware that I can install between the house and workplace which is 3 km away from each other in a straight line, because I'm not willing to pay R4 800 per month for unshaped that is 4096kbps for both sides and I would also like to know if it would be safe doing it wireless, I would appreciate any help.
Thank you

To paraquote Evil Incarnate (estate agents): "location, location, location"! Id est:

- where are you at? Goes to who my be able to come and help you should it come to that.
- where are you? A house you can mod != a cluster[-]fvck[/-] where you have to get permission for, well, anything != to a block of flats.
- where's your office at? In relation to your domicilium, that is: there trees/a bloody great hill, a monster building in the way?

Really, you are going to have to give the okes here more to go on! :p

2 options:
1. Join WUG, which should cost you about 2k x 2 on both sides, and stream through that.
2. Get a 4meg local bandwidth line, should be much cheaper. Stream through that.

I reside in Nelspruit.
For the house, a fixture may be erected.
If I were to stand ontop of the roof of the office I can see the house which is on a mountain. There is some trees in the way but nothing like a hill ect.

Well, getting wireless help from WUGgers might help....but the 4meg line might work out to be easier. Scrap the 384 at work, get a 4 meg line, but get a router that can handle multiple dial up connections. Buy a 384 account for normal internet, and get a local only account for the cameras. http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/local/

Might be a little tricky to set up, but if it works it could be awesome.

The WUG type connection is going to be 10 times harder to get set up, unless you can get people that have done it before. Other worry is line of sight. The only reason I have not joined WUG yet is because I am surrounded by trees that are pretty high, and I would have to build a mother of a tower for line of sight. Sucks.

Do you think a Netgear dgn 2000 will work?
What do you mean by multiple dial up connections? Ok i see that the local is shaped would that make a difference if its shaped or not.
So i can imagne local bandwith would be mcuh faster right?

Don't know if that router would work, don't have much time to find out right at this moment.

Multiple dial up connections is when you run 2 or more accounts over a ADSL line. You get a line from telkom, you could actually dial up with 2 internet accounts. I used to get an account from my main isp, and then a local only account from someone else. I could not do it on my router, but set it up on my pc via bridge mode that both of the accounts dial up. Both did. The local only account and international accounts shared my 384 line, so you won't get faster than that, but both can work at the same time. Local bandwidth at that stage was much cheaper. Costed like R100 for 30gb. I got an app online that was set up that whatever local bandwidth was used was rooted through my local only account, and everything else was routed through my international account. Saved a ton of money that way.

Local bandwidth will be the same speed, just much cheaper to buy a capped solution than uncapped account and use over a faster line.

Remember that upload on a 4mb line is only 512kb so if you're using it at both ends you wont get faster than 512kb.

Thanks for all the info. I'll do a little more research, but you guys certainly shoved me in the right direction to get started. Anyone else have some ideas, feel free to share. Thanks.!!!
