I have gone through majority of the threads and little has been said about the hardware required for Wimax connectivity.

Can anyone advise what hardware is required and approximate cost over and above Telkoms R 240/month and the cost of the ISP (can any ISP who provides bandwidth be used?).

Also, how does one ascertain what areas are covered. We reside on Bloubosrand, Northriding area and iBurst is just getting worse so the time to switch is now, but according to Telkom even though our exchange is ADSL compliant, we still cannot get ADSL to our residence.

Not to be rude, but I don't think you searched very far...

The equipment stays telkom's, so when you stop using the service, they collect it. If I remember correctly, someone once said something about it costing about R8000.

You can use any ISP that provides BW.

When you phoned them, didn't they give you the option of WiMax as an alternative?
They can send a techie to test the signal at your residence.

Hope this helps :D

Hey! Don't be rude! ;):D

Did a search and nothing came up so posted instead and there is no mention of it on Telkom's website.

LOL! Don't be silly. They just advised me that the exchange was compliant and that I would have to wait until they were able to ensure that they could roll it out into our area.....

Will give them another shout to get them to come and test the signal.

Helped a lot, thanks.

-You need to buy a router if you want to share the connection with multiple machines.
-If its just for 1 machine then you just need an extra network card and you can use ICS (internet connection sharing) for xboxlive gaming or what ever you wanna do.

I don't think you can use ICS for more than 1 connection. If you can then you can do something like the following:

WiMAX shared with NIC 1
NIC 1 shared with NIC 2
NIC 2 shared with NIC 3 etc...So daisy chain style...

So it's:
-The install fee once off,
-R240 a month to Telkom
-ISP charges.
-Cost of a router or another pci network card.

Telkom just install the antenna and run a network cable (RJ-45 connector) directly to your network card or a router (which ever you have).

Phone 10217. Ask them to check your signal coverage for WiMAX. I think telkom also have a coverage map on their website. Also see other topic regarding this:
