Hardware needed to run Photoshop

I'm new to this and I have a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz pc lying around somewhere.

Will this do the trick or do I need to sell some of my daughter's shoes to fund a better rig?

I simply want to take photos from my camera, apply all the groovy post processing and end up with less than ****ty pictures.

It should run it - the more ram the better though and a fast couple of drives wouldn't hurt.

But why not invest in a lightroom/elements combo and spend the money you would save on upgrading your PC?

I'm running it on a 1.6GHz Atom with 2GB RAM, and it's workable.

One tip: spend more time behind the camera and less time behind the computer, and gradually you'll need Photoshop less...

Ok I have a bunch of 1TB drives so this should be ok. Are you suggesting Lightroom in place of Photoshop?

Oh well I have an Atom motherboard sitting in the office next to mine so I may try that first.

Thanks for the replies and yes I don't intend to spend too much time on this as the keyboard is glued to my fingers during the day and my woodworking projects need attention.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. Mine is the D510 or something - 1.6GHz dual core. The N270 may not have the same capabilities. Mine is an ASUS 1201N netbook, and it's good for 8GB DDR2-800 RAM. Your P4 is likely to perform better though. The atom is is a bit of a dog.

I have the Intel D510MO board but it only supports 4Gb RAM but it's more than my P4 has so I might just give that a go.

Sounds nice, what's the screen like?

Low end. It's bright and glossy, and just fine for facebook and skype, and adequate enough to flip through my pics while I'm travelling and keyword/sort them, but I wouldn't trust it if I needed accurate colours. On the upside, it's a 12" panel that does 1366x768 or something around there - same as the 11" MacBook Air, so it's a bit better than the entry-level netbooks. Aperture is actually workable at that resolution!
