Hardware prices in SA

You've got a decimal point error there somewhere. I think you mean 1.24x - which is not too bad when you consider transport and other costs to bring the stuff into ZA.

I was comparing the Dollar-Rand exchange rate with the USBought680-ZABought680 exchange rate. But I know what you mean and your calculation is wrong. it is R6200 as compared to R4066 is 1.65x. That is what it currently is. I wish it was still 1.24x like it seemed to be a while back.

The suppliers have to pay VAT on the items when they get here so your base price of $499 becomes R4636 using your exchange rate. They then have to make some money on the product and so do the retailers.

Shipping is not making up the price difference that you see but it is a factor and every little bit adds up in the end.

Some money? Oh you mean the extra R1600. Oh my... How do they survive?

Just don't buy your stuff from Incredible connection:D

The price was from the online Prophecy Shop. Usually one of the more affordable places. And my whole point in the end is that I have looked at this for a long time and where a year or two ago you could generally bet on getting a $100 item in SA for R1000 (very roughly speaking) now a $100 item will likely cost you about R1200. I know the rand dollar has seen a little hike recently, but not that much. Not by a long shot.
