So, a week or so ago (30 June, to be exact), Linus Tech Tips featured this video:

This tickled my fancy, and as I don't have good airflow through my current case, I started to look at the local pricing for this case.
Looking at various online shops (Wootware, Evetech - for reference only, Dreamwaretech, Takealot, etc), the local pricing seemed to be in the R1900 to R2500 range, with Takealot being the most expensive.

However, spending R2k on a case made me hesitate, so I put the idea on hold.
This week I again started to look at the pricing. Imagine my surprise, when prices are now generally over R3k, with Takealot being R4122 at this stage (3rd party seller).
When using Serval to track the TA pricing, here is what it looks like:

My only conclusion is that post-LTT video, demand spiked, causing the supplier to up their prices as well. Yes, the rand has weakened, but not by that much.

I can only hope the price will come back down, or start looking at similar cases at a reasonable price.

Just to be clear, this isn't me complaining. The system of supply vs demand is working as it is meant to. It was just interesting how quickly it happened.

ZAR weakening - quite significantly actually - worldwide price of fuel is even more significant.
Bear in mind suppliers are trying to keep prices stable so they will overcompensate to start with in a volatile market.

30 June: 1 USD = 16.2 ZAR
8 July: 1 USD = 16.8 ZAR

So it weakened, but not by that much. But yes, maybe they are trying to offset costs on new stock currently coming in.

Also, here is the pricing for the Corsair 5000D tempered case. Similar price point, no massive change.
EDIT: same 3rd party seller as the case in the OP.

Never heard of him.

Suppliers were selling a LOT of stuff at giveaway pricing trying to maximize revenue for the financial year, which ended on 30 June. Pricing normalized on 1 July as the rush for sales came to an end.

A slightly better case for a similar price can be had in white at a very low price right now:

Just for what it's worth.

If this was the reason, I would think other similar products would see the same happening.

Thanks for the case recommendations, but:
1. I don't like white cases;
2. I was so shocked, I rather spent my money on a Lego Saturn V

They absolutely did. Hisense TVs went (back) up about 10%, MSI laptops went (back) up by around 15%, Logitech mice went (back) up by about 10%, AMD CPUs went (back) up by about 10-20% depending on the SKU, some Cooler Master products that were HEAVILY discounted went (back) up by 50-100%, Fifine microphones went (back) up by about 30%, etc etc etc.

Prices on stock feeds were dropped, and product managers contacted us for further discounting. These discounts started at various times going back as far as May, and all expired last week Thursday COB.

On top of that, we get quarterly rebates from certain vendors. End of June was end of a quarter. Here were some rebates I HAD, which came to an end along with the end of June:

This is how I was able to do eg Ryzen 5950X for R 9,999, Ryzen 5900X for R 7,699, Ryzen 5600X for R 3,849, etc - prices which are now way below cost, until I get my next round of rebates (well, fingers crossed - they're not guaranteed).

It has now been a week since I started this thread.

Prices are back down:
Wootware R1755, Rebeltech R1729, Takealot R2399 (different seller), Dreamwaretech R1729.
Serval tracking hasn't updated its graph yet.

So there was a definite temporary increase. I still maintain this was due to an increase in demand, probably triggered by the LTT video.
Demand probably fell due to the price increase for this case, thereby prompting the price to come down again.
