Hi all,

Would like your input on some of you using pfsense, ipfire etc. been running them on old Core 2 duo desktops for years.
Any recommendations on smaller still powerful devices with at least 2 nics?

Depends on your network you placing this on, as this will influence the features and load on the hardware.

Currently running a few pfsense boxes for QoS as it is by far the best and some caching. A few IPfire boxes for mostly caching. So its HDD hungry. I think if i can get good all rounder it should be ok.

Ive tried small form factor pc's with 2 nics, and those mini itx boards, but its always hasel to get something propper, you end up having to customize the psu etc, so they bring in 10 at a time for me, and i buy as needed

I used the WAFERs for production machines. XP with dos program to monitor fog meters.
I wonder if Peet still works there. My last coms was with a Peet guy.

He is the owner! I'm doing business from 2001 with them, last 3 years they grew allot! Even have Cape Town branch now (somerset west)

You can use Raspberry PI with usb network adaptor and iptables to make yourself small router! If you want todo reporting, thats bit difficult (for me in anyway)
Nice to play with, but then to buy Mikrotik is way easier.

Mikrotik is brilliant. But I think they can focus a bit on increasing hardware capability. Furthest Wifi link I installed with separate RX TX grids was 68km.

I use to be a big Mikrotik fan, I moved to Radwin, really impressive stuff.

You beat my distance, I thought 54km was impressive

Honestly im not into the industrial field anymore. Moved to Jhb Hell 5years ago and now more corporate networks. Currently experimenting with fortigate fw and fortiAPs. Works great from management perspective but they suck when comes with firmware updates. Something always breaks.

I went the other direction, i'm a 77 baby, I had enough of the hectic Gauteng life and moved back to my birth town/city, now still in IT, but remote support, watch the kite surfers, and work up courage to go and do it while i work.
