After enqiring to Telkom about when my area will have its exchange upgraded to ADSL, I was told that the exchange was not on the list of exchanges to be upgraded as there was already "too much fibre optic ISDN lines and too little copper analogue lines".

My current line is an analogue line, so what needs to be done to my line at the exchange to enable ADSL? What hardware needs to be installed at the exchange by Telkom, how much does it cost. Can I have it done privately, just to my line or do they need to spend millions to upgrade the entire exchange?

If cost were not an issue, how could this be done? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Teklom need to install a DSLAM at the exchange.

The DSLAM must then connect to Teklom's local fibre ATM backbone network.

Now - if the exchange is already stuffed full of fibre ISDN lines, then the DSLAM will not be cost effective, as the DSLAM probably takes about 50 analog lines, and if there are only 10 analog lines at the exchange, then the DSLAM is going to be wasting 40 ports.

But - teklom made 6bn in profit - insist on it.

Excellent reply, thanks Stoke.

Right, now who can tell me how much a DSLAM costs? How big is it? Who do I pay to install it at the exchange?

Poor old Eastern Cape - last on the list for everything. All the wireless guys are fighting over the Gauteng region, while we stand here begging to give our money to someone, anyone!!!!!

Only place would be telkom. Nobody else would be able to do it privately.

I think your only bet is to pray and hope that all the ISDN clients on your exchange cancel their service so that telkom has more ports available. Of course though people wont cancel because they cant get ADSL. They cant get ADSL because everyone has ISDN. And they wont cancel ISDN because the cant get ADSL... And around and around you go until Telkom hopefully dies of laughter at everyone.

Or Telkom decides to upgrade you all to ADSL at the cost of only R10 more than ADSL/m

....I think I need to leave now.. Somebody most of put something in my coffee because I'm day dreaming

25km east of EL in one of those sleepy little communities on the sea. The sea, a river mouth, 50 houses and a pub - some people call it heaven. If only we had ADSL!!

Buy an ADSL Over IDSN USB Modem :P. Same as the POTS modem which are Annex A, cept this one is Annex B.

What is an ADSL over ISDN modem? How does it work? Will it give me the broadband ability that normal ADSL will provide?
