hi guys

can anyone give me more info on this bike. i want to start riding and i was at a Harley shop yesterday and they showed me a 883 with 1600km on the clock and selling for R70k. the guys said it's a easy to maintain bike.

can i use it everyday?
how is the maintenance?

Is it fast?

He started the bike for me, the sound is lovely:D
 
Well marketed cr@p

It's a Harley, which means it's slow. But as Harleys go, the 883 is by far the slowest of the lot. It is barely fast enough to stay upright on its own. It is less fast than the spotty 16 year old down the road's 125 sewing machine. Nobody keeps an 883 for long because they are so excruciatingly slow.

Reliability wise they are ok- old tech and overengineered, but they shake a lot so things work loose and fall off all the time.

They are waaay overpriced though and like anything American, poorly designed and assembled but extremely well marketed.

Put it this way- would you buy a shiny chrome American 56k modem with loose screws for R200 because of the chrome, the marketing, and the "lifestyle brand" over a black plastic Japanese DSL modem for R100?

Also consider that as your first bike you will probably have a little spill or 2 in the first few months. Do that on something cheap and "disposable" while you decide what kind of bike you really want. But even if you really want a Harley, you really don't want the 883.

I would suggest that for now you buy your "beginner" bike fully intending to sell it again in under a year- at a loss of course.

Buy something:
Cheap,
Light,
Comfortable and user friendly
Not too tall (you should get both feet down easy)
Crashable- best here is a bike without a fairing, but with a narrow engine that won't be the first thing to hit the ground. Second best is probably with a fairing but with crash bobbins- things that look like roller skate wheels that keep the fairing off the deck. Avoid unprotected fairings or wide engines.

Then get the experience, live the lifestyle a bit, choose the bike you think you want, research it, and test ride it and its competitors.

And beware, they're addictive. I've had over 40 bikes and currently have 6.

Harley = 2-wheel tractor. People buy them for the sound (macho).

Check it has the new ‘Evolution’ engine otherwise major maintenance. I don’t know much about Harley’s. I have standards.
