Hi all

I saw some posts from last year that was similar to this.

I've been receiving calls on my cell (I am with Vodacom) from a "withheld" number, but no-one speaks on the other side. It is not a telemarketing call, as you can hear the person breathing on the other side. Sometimes I listen to hear if I can hear background noizes, and eventually this unknown person hangs up. It's definitely a private person calling me.
These calls are now beyond irritating and harrasmemt, they are starting to scare me. I get calls at 1am, 2am, 3am frequently.

I've tried the dial *59 and *69 options, but seems those were just urban legends, doesn't work.

All I want is the phone number that these calls are coming from...I need no names, or anything. How can I trace the call? Or who can I speak to at Vodacom to trace the call?

I am getting desperate! I want to sort this sh*t out! Not only harrasment, but sleepless nights and worry is taking it's toll. This a*****e I want to nail, that's the only way it's going to stop. All I need is the cell number or phone number where it's coming from.

Anyone that can help or assist, I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Take out your battery at night might help as a temporary solution

Edit: or just put the phone on mute at night

Yeah that is a temporary solution, and I hear where you're coming from...the problem is I need my phone on all the time for work purposes. And I cannot NOT answer calls from private numbers because lots of times work related calls are from premi-cells or similar which are listed of "unknown" or "withheld".

Ultimately I don't want to change my number, switch my phone off, or anything ('Cos I can't really)...I want to trace the number these calls are coming from.

I'd be surprised (pleasantly surprised) if they didnt claim they require a police report before they'll investigate it.

I see your point, then it requires a bit more attention ... Maybe PM the Vodacom Representative here...

Cool, will try that, thanks for the link. I have just called them too...and got "the police will assist you on that, please go to your nearest station."
I mean hell, the cops have so much sh*t to deal with, this kinda thing gets put under the table, not even at the bottom of the pile!!

Thank again.

Maybe, if all else fails that's what I'll do. Or maybe a private investigator. But the quickest is to just get the number its coming from, then I can sort it out chop chop!

I have mailed the Vodacom representative as Ninja suggested, so will see what he says.

It's bull man...how can people hide behind a cell phone? The phones (and networks) and making it SO easy for the weirdo's to do this!!

you need to go to the police station and get that letter from them stamped to.This they will follow up.THere was a time i to got those calls, but now they stopped,
my Solution was use my other sim for 30 days and then swopped again. No more calls but helloooo voicemails

Yeah that would work too...but I have so many contacts and work related clients that have my number, if I swop a sim for 30 days 80% of them won't get hold of me! And to let them all know will take me a year!
Damn...I want to keep my number, and I have to keep my cell on.

well an investigating letter from your closest SAPS should solve the problem if you send it to Voda...no need to spend on private investigators

Will Voda then give me the number, or the SAPS? And in turn, if they only give it to the SAPS, will the SAPS give it to me? Not going to make me feel much better if they say it's been sorted out, and dealt with...but I still dunno who the d@mn culprit was.

Hey as far as i know u can open a case of harassment with the police. They will inturn track the calls from vodacom and then they should take action. I know what its like to get these damn calls but i just changed my number to stop the problem.

Depending on the make/model of your phone, you could also install one of those answerphone/call screening apps which would allow you to set up a profile for the withheld number, playing a voice recording stating that calls from withheld numbers are not accepted, allowing your legit contacts to call again from an alternate number. Ather calls would come through as normal.

The thing is, it could be one of your clients or someone who works for them, so giving someone a new number for a while might just inform your stalker of the number too.
The networks keep all interconnect information so they can supply you with the information.
My advice would be to get a case number as a start and then contact the networks fraud and risk department as they are the ones with all the access to records and they normally want to help.

Vodacom will give the number to SAPS and then you can open a case against the person

I don't see why a lazy Voda operator can't just make a 10 second call to the withheld number to put things right. Call it customer service. Oh, that doesn't exist anymore ...

I fully agree!!! Maybe I should try that? But that's also probably "against their policy!!!"

My husband has been getting these calls as well. Only difference is he can actually see the number, but doesn't know what to do about it. On a few occasions the person has said 'hello' (eish) but nowadays they just remain silent. We woke up at 5am this morning with the phone ringing, we ignored it and it rung a further 4 times before the person stopped. If something can be done about the situation if you have the phone number, then I would like to hear about it. If we dial back on the same number, there is no reply.
