Has an antenna helped you?

We now sell the new iBurst antenna, they are omni poles which get drilled into your wall. they are expensive but work like a dream.
 
I have a burning question.

How which will this Iburst Desktop aerial (for R350) improve my signal in real numbers?

At the moment I know the following things.

signal strength hovers between -83db and -88db.
Would the aerial improve this, and in numbers by how much? Will it be 18dBi as advertised on the Phoenix site?

P.S Iburst tell me you can buy the aerial at Hi-Fi corp for a trial over 7 days. If you don't like it you can give it back.

I had an average of -102db <> -98db.

I installed the default iBurst antenna and I now have a steady -78db

So I got a 20db improval....

I would guess you would get down to at least -75db which makes a big difference....

So, omni - is next unprofessional idea from unprofeessionals from iBurst.
All explanations will try to post later.

Omni-antenna will improve signal FROM the TOWER (you don't need this!!) and will not (in fact - very little) improve YOUR signal TO the tower, as it transmitt power to all 360 degree. You will see 5 light on the modem, but little improvement in speed. Tower will see you as "difficult" user and WILL DROP THE SPEED!!! This is based at iBurst technology ideas.

Omni is good antenna for recieving of the signal, but not for transmitting.

Can I therefore assume that the flat panel directional antenna from Iburst (R350) would be better than this Omni Antenna?
 
yes! It trasmittion diagram is in range of 45 - 90 degree and my directional is 3-8. This increases YOUR signal to the tower and enables full speed. My personal location is 9.6 km from the Roodeport tower. With the directional antenna connection speed is in range 900 - 1000kbps.

As a matter of interest can you tell me the signal strength you have in terms of dBi (decibels) using that ucttracestar tool?

I currently get about 87dBi without an antenna and after testing I get 79-80dBi with an antenna I've borrowed. Wondering if it is worth keeping at the moment.

(It's a directional antenna)

Can you get to test an antenna before buying it?? From a supplier, coz none of my friends got antennas.
 
Yes Iburst has a a 7 day trial policy.

If you go get one from Hi-Fi Corp, you can give it back if you are not satisfied. The same rule applies to buying a UTD etc
 
All this is confusing me, What is the best option in terms of value for money and what will give me the greatest overall signal strength? (To and from the tower)
PS: willing to go up to R1500 max
 
A panel antenna and mounting it outside high up (e.g. 1st floor). You will definitely stand to benefit. For R350 and some hard work looking for the sweet spot and mounting the thing should make it worth while for you.
 
Question: does an antenna improve latency as well? Might cancel my ADSL order if it does.
 
I wanted to order an antenna for my PCMCIA modem just to find out that they don't stock Laptop antennas for the old grey modem anymore. I asked the guy at Iburst how can they run a business like that??
So to use the laptop antenna they've got now, you have to have on of the new PCMCIA cards!!! CRAP!!
