Has anyone bought from DJI direct ?

I am comparing the price of the drone i want on DJI website to a local site Droneworld.co.za

I know there is tax,vat and ANC share but wtf the price difference is huge.

Has anyone bought directly and what shipping company did they use?

I bought from Takealot and ORMS. I'd consider it, but if there's an issue with it aren't you then gonna deal with shipping costs back to the US for repairs etc?

Yup. We get ****ed with this sort of stuff. Was at a conference yesterday and we had an attendee from London, she said she was shocked at the price difference of electronic stuff, everything from smaller decent headphones to photographic equipment.

So local price is about 15.7k ?

Take the $800 (which probably excludes sales tax) - say 6%?
Add Vat onto that .. + 14%
Add customs (say ~20% - but could be less)
= $1 160

Take the USD/ZAR (real bank conversion rate) - at about R12.3 - and you get ~ 14.3k

Add in shipping and insurance (DHL is going to set you back a fair bit) - and suddenly that R15.7k isn't looking too bad?

Especially (as others have pointed out)- having a local place to return stuff to if it breaks or is out of box faulty - is worth the extra bit.

Here's a realistic breakdown of the costs, so you can see local is fair and reasonable.

First, you must the use the correct exchange rate (ie the Bank Sell Rate, selling ZAR to buy USD), which right now is R12.2924 to buy $1. Here's FNB's sell rate to check for yourself.

Second, let's assume you get a 20% discount from the US seller. For a retail customer this is very unlikely.

Price waterfall for SA-based reseller/retailer outlet buying in USA for sale in SA:

US MSRP                                   $799.00             R9821.63
FOB Cost after 20% reseller discount      $639.20             R7857.30
Shipping cost to SA, with insurance       $120.00             R1475.09
SA Customs Duty 17.5%                     $111.86             R1375.03
SA Customs VAT (14% on 110% of
     FOB invoice value)                   $ 98.44             R1210.02
Clearance/agent fees                      $ 20.34             R250.00

Landed cost in SA                         $989.83            R12 167.44

SA Selling price with 20% margin
   for retailer (excl VAT)                $1237.29           R15 209.30

SA retail price with VAT                                     R17 338.61

Not included are finance charges such as bank fees (eg SWIFT commission on an EFT, or credit card fees), or local delivery.

I brought in a DJI drone from the USA and it had a fly away and vanished, as **** luck would have it, flight map shows right into a river and bye bye.
DJI replaced it sent replacement to my usa shipper - but I decided to register with local DJI just to make my life easier for future issues.
