That gives him at least some confidence.

Then there is the advantage of speaking the local language, or a close enough version of it.

And then also, a live-streaming camera can put a second thought into an opportunists' head.

Finally, he is overtly friendly. Many if not most 3rd-party street observers would take his side if it came down to it.
