Has the mighty VPN ended monopolistic control?

Yes, I'm talking about how DStv and Hollywood etc. have cornered many TV content markets for decades, and how VPN's are "allowing" people to bypass that these days. For years already actually.
Do you? - join the above poll if you want (anonymous, even the Mods say they can't see who voted what).


Using a VPN to access another country's legitimate TV offerings, and paying for that, is not a crime. Nobody has stopped the practice. Nobody has tried to prosecute it either.

Thing is, can they ever find a way to do something about it?
How would they argue that the borderless internet has geographical demarcations? How would they get all countries to cooperate?

At the same time, things like business products' copyright regulations (which do have international cooperation) are still categorised as to the type of product it is, and where it's valid geographically and that's unlikely to change. So the two related interests seem to currently be contradicting each other.

As we've seen, there's also attempts to regulate the internet, especially in *commie countries like ours... ( * yes, disguised in our case)
 
VPN is hardly the be all to circumventing geographic restrictions. Its easy to detect. At this point there just isn't a will to do anything about it.

You forget its supposed main purpose - privacy protection. Who's going to challenge using it for that need?
 
use VPN and pirate freely, when will these greedy companies understand that the internet is the wild west,
you can impose laws, but people will just find ways around it.

VPN providers use a variety of techniques to make VPN traffic look like regular internet traffic and avoid detection, so it is not always that easy to detect.

Of course as you know some VPN's aren't too good though. Depends on what's needed, but for anything serious one doesn't want to use something like the built-in Opera browser's VPN. There's only maybe 3 or 4 that are really good.
 
Other. I don't use streaming services, I watch movies maybe 2 times a year.
