JOHANNESBURG – Hashim Amla has been announced as the new the Proteas Test captain, taking the place of Graeme Smith.

The Cricket South Africa (CSA) Board of Directors accepted a unanimous recommendation by the national selectors, announcing the decision a short while ago.

“It gives me great pleasure to congratulate Hashim on his appointment,” said CSA Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat. “Hashim is universally respected, both in South Africa and around the cricketing world.

“Stability has been one of the endearing qualities he has brought to the Proteas and this is important at a time when we have had to replace several key players in Smith, [Jacques] Kallis and [Mark] Boucher.”

It was also revealed that AB de Villiers will be the vice captain to Amla while the men will reverse roles in the One Day format.

Amla’s first outing as captain will be in Sri Lanka next month for a two-match series.

Responding to the announcement, Amla said it was “an honour and a privilege” to lead the national Test team.

“I would like to pay tribute to the leadership Graeme Smith has provided throughout my international career. This is an exciting challenge but one that I take on with positivity with our Test team being in exceptionally good space at the moment with the support of a strong core of senior players.”

Amla’s predecessor has welcomed the news:

Awesome news.

I would prefer to captain with more fire personally

cant fault the guy, whether he will be a good captain, only time will tell

Depends whether he really wants this or was pushed because of someone wanting a transformation captain. Strange the sudden turn around from Hash...

This.

He's a bit soft and might get intimidated easily.

Could very well affect his batting.

Wish him well tho.

I think he has proven tough with his batting. Just not the "beer and boots" type personality.

Fire is ineffective when pitted against stone. Amla could very well show the same resilience as a captain as he shows while batting.

The last time we had a Hashim Amla type personality as cap was Clive Lloyd back in the 60's.

Since then gritty, steely, hard as nails and sometimes slightly arrogant caps have proven the most successful.

Amla is like Tendulkar who operates best playing second fiddle to the captain.

Transformation Politics within the Proteas structure might even be a deciding factor.

Congrats Amla, though I'm not sure who good he is going be at the job...

Many Captains (Ponting, Strauss in recent times) have been a more steely reserved player than the extreme fire in the belly type.

I am also not sure that Amla will balance the act, but he deserves a chance.

The other thing I am not sure of is that AA had anything to do with it as Amla has been asked to Captain the team (ODI and Test) in more than one instance, where he declined it.

I wish him all the best and hope that himself and AB can really lead the team to form a truly great team for the next 5-6 years.
