Hatchback or sedan

Which smaller crossover SUV? Are you also comparing it to a compact sedan?
No, but I'm not the one comparing the boot space of a hatch with a SUV.

I think he was more referring to the fact on how they work in comparison to a sedan. Now I really want a station wagon :-) why did they have to disappear.

Well I'd put the Captiva in the bigger SUV bracket, with the likes of the CX3, Mokka X in the small category. Still it's got a what, 465 litre size boot according to google? Obviously depends on what sedan you're comparing it to but a C Class, which is about average I'd say, has a 480 litre boot. Jetta's is massive at over 500 litres.
I hate that measurement unit for space though as it doesn't tell the full story - shape and loading height also play a role. And that's loading the SUV to the loading tray height probably.
Either way, I wasn't referring to which is strictly bigger, but which is easier to fit stuff in. I find sedan's the most accommodating.
Funny you mention that but when we travel to the UK we can fit our luggage in the boot of our Captiva quite comfortably but it doesn't fit in my mother's C-Class. Two of us usually end up taking the train home. The kids see it as an adventure, I'm more inclined to call it a pain in the arse. :)

That said my mokka has much less space as does the missus' Spark. Still, I don't fancy my chances of getting our two great danes into the trunk of a sedan :p

It ultimately depends what you are loading.

If you need to load vertically and want the option to remove the back board then the Hatchback can often offer more, especially with the way the boot opens.

This transfers to SUV's for the same reason.

Sedans often offer more in strict litre capacity but the "load opening" is often limited.

There is a reason the Honda Jazz is the most popular car for people with wheelchairs because it can swallow that thing whole, whereas a massive sedan often requires dismantling of said wheelchair.

For this very reason I think Hatches/SUV's make more sense for people with babies and loading prams and the like.

I don't think legroom is affected in most cars built on the same platforms. Across different manufacturers maybe.

Even though I don't really like the shape, I wouldn't mind a station wagon myself, all the positives of an suv, without the draw backs.

Yeah after having a station wagon as a loan vehicle for two weeks my mind has been flipped about them.

All the versatility of a bakkie in most cases without the compromise.

Would love an Audi Allroad Quattro.

Yeah if you remove those boards from the back you could easily stack quite a bit more stuff in your SUV. We're the opposite in that stuff that fits into our sedan ends up on laps in our SUV.
And you raise another good point - if you're moving stuff like dogs then your decision becomes much easier. Like I said, get the one that fits your lifestyle.
