I've never seen Tofu in my local PnP.

I would like to experiment with it.

Is it worthy of experimenting with?

I have eaten it yes. Tofu is extremely bland, so you have to add flavour to it. You can use it in a curry with vegetables, as it will soak up the flavours of the other ingredients. Its actually tasteless, and has a firm creamy texture.

Tofu will take on the taste of whatever you prepare it with. It's very bland on its own, but a nice marinated tofu can be very good.

Tofu on its own is like eating gellatin. It serves as adding body to a curry or soup. Goes well with Thai food as Thai food has the sharp flavours...

It makes a great scramble (for breakfast).

Ingredients:
•1/2 yellow onion, diced
•1/2 green bell pepper, diced
•1 block tofu, drained and pressed
•2 tbsp oil or margarine
•1 tsp garlic powder
•1 tsp onion powder
•1 tbsp soy sauce
•2 tbsp nutritional yeast
•1/2 tsp turmeric (optional)
Preparation:
Slice the tofu into approximately one inch cubes. Then, using either your hands or a fork, crumble it slightly.
Sautee onion, pepper and crumbled tofu in oil for 3-5 minutes, stirring often. Add remaining ingredients, reduce heat to medium and allow to cook 5-7 more minutes, stirring frequently and adding more oil if needed.

I find it delicious. Instead of Onion powder I use chili.

As a vegetrian who enjoys just about anything and everything veg related all I can say is Tofu tastes like Velenoso says it tastes like :D

One of my friends loves it though. Although in his defence his taste in food generally sucks.

Tried it once with a colleague with a pro-veggie agenda. Was okay but I'd rather stick with meat.

Is that really necessary?

SEE satanboy? Go try it and tell me it tastes good. :p

you know there's a story going around about how tofu was first used by chinese monasteries more than 2,000 years ago to promote abstinence because soy contains elements that kill libido ....

Real men don't eat tofu

I can't remember exactly off the top of my head but in sushi places you get these parcels that I think are made from deep fried tofu stuffed with rice and sushi the parcel bit is very good tastes a little like bread I guess but I like them even without the rice and sushi

There are two different types of tofu. Silken tofu being my favourite. Try them all experiment with flavours. Regular tofu marinaded and then fried is delicious, but you should always press it first before using - google how to - I don't have the time to go into detail here. Silken tofu in desserts works really well and has an awesome texture.

I don't eat the stuff all that often though so don't really have a decent database of recipes. I usually experiment with the stuff with Asian flavors...

I have never eaten it before, but I imagine that taste wise and texture wise it would be be somewhere between paneer and haloumi?

That's very close to the texture of regular tofu, yes. Silken tofu has more of a set yoghurt texture...
