Ported Vodacom to MTN about ten years ago.

Don't think I'll leave MTN. I hate Vodacom and Telkom with passion, and don’t really trust Cell C.

No, but I should have. I have a prepaid number now that I just use and have to buy airtime for, even though I have contract with minutes/data. I just have a fear if I use that number that no-one will be able to contact me, not that they do.

My wife ported from MTN to Vodacom about 13 years ago.

Day 1:
She goes in to MTN/Vodacom to port and they confirm it's being done
She had the same number since getting her first phone in like 2001

Day 2:
She starts getting phonecalls and messages not intended for her and her friends are also telling her that they tried to phone her and they got through to someone else

Day 3:
She gets a phonecall from herself, her own number calling her, and a woman goes off at her
Wife then determines that in the 24 hours the number was supposed to be ported, MTN marked the number as available for use on their side and issued it to a new customer

The new customer, who at this stage had the cellphone number for 3 days initially refused to give my wife her number back, saying that she's already given the number out and she's important... bla bla bla
She kept calling my wife to tell her to stop using her number

It took a couple more days for the issue to be rectified, MTN eventually giving this psychotic woman a new number and the porting was completed.

Somehow the same number was in service both on Vodacom and MTN at the same time - haphazardly forwarding the call/sms to either at any point in time.

This was years ago though, early days of porting.
Not similar but similar story here. I opened a new contract with vodacom a couple of years ago and immediately started getting a ton of whatsapps/calls from random women.

I just methodically blocked each one and within 6 months stopped getting messages/calls. It's been probably 8 or so years now and all good. Always have a good laugh thinking of it though, the dude must've been a total pimp

On contract the whole time?

I think this is my 3rd time on prepaid with Vodacom, same number also since about March 1999.
Yep. I generally upgraded every 2 years. I'm usually on the cheapest package of around R100 per month, I think the S7 was the first time I went for a flagship device. Never been on prepaid.

I've ported my number to every mobile operator and it wasn't that hard. I got my current number while I was on Virgin Mobile many moons ago. I was a digital nomad for a while but I settled with MTN almost 10 years ago.

I've been porting my numbers since it was first introduced many years ago and actually have kept the same mobile number for 30+ years as a result. I've dealt with MTN, Vodacom and Telkom and several Independent Service providers.

No, no need to port yet. I am happy with Telkom Postpaid. I am not touching vo-dah and EmptyN with a mop anytime soon.

I ported from MTN to Vodacom a few years ago to get a specific device. That was painless. The port back from Vodacom to MTN 2 years later was super painful!

So I've also ported a few times over the years. The first time was very painful, trying to port while on a post paid is terribly difficult. Rather move to prepaid before doing the port, works much better that way.

When I ported from Telkom to MTN I had an issue whereby the port went through, but if someone on the Telkom network tried to call there was some error. People who were not on the Telkom network could get hold of me without a problem. Needless to say, this took Telkom a while to fix.

Ported 2 Telkom numbers to Freshphone in 2018. FF arranged it at a cost of R155. My home phone went through immediately, but the workshop phone porting was declined by Telkom since they said the billing address did not match the physical address. Telkom had been sending invoices to this address since 1980. I had to "prove" that the workshop was in the same building by means of a letter from the landlord

The lady dealing with this operated from Port Elizabeth and said she could not find the premises on her map, so the shop did not exist. Such muddled and inept thinking made me glad to be rid of Telkom

The shop's monthly phone spend came down from R800 to under R130

At work we give employees a work mobile phone. Our corporate account is with Vodacom. Often new joiners do not want to have two phones and they request that we port their numbers to our corporate account. If they are with Vodacom also it is easy, you simply transfer the contract from personal to corporate. If they are with MTN, they have to wait until their contract expires and then only can the number be ported over to Vodacom. Have done this MTN to Vodacom port a few times without any major issues.
