Hawk, made by Canadian company Dr. Robot, is a humanoid, autonomous and wireless robot that is now freely available for purchase.
Featuring dual arms and built on an i90 robot base it is a human like robot with hawk like features such as a pointed head and long claw-like arms. It also includes a dual camera animated head, indoor GPS navigation system and an auto dock charging system.
The robot can be controlled by a wireless remote or a small touch screen on its chest.
According to Dr. Robot, which was established in 2001 by a group of scientists and engineers who had previous experience building robotic systems for space agencies, Hawk can operate for between 6 to 8 hours and charges itself autonomously when its battery is flat. It can also lift up to 1kg and stands at 1.4 metres tall.
The 3.5 colour display on its chest can play .wmv files with audio and it runs on Wi-Fi 802.11g. Hawk also has a maximum speed of 0.5 metres per second and has a body weight of 21KG.
Although no prices are available as yet the base parts of the robot cost roughly $5000 (R42 200).
It’s currently unclear what practical use Hawk offers to consumers although Dr. Robot describes its goal as providing “cost-effective, high performance robots for industrial, commercial and academic end-users alike”.
