My lay understanding of this phenomenon is as follows:

A virtual particle/antiparticle pair come into brief existence near the event horizon of the black hole. The virtual antiparticle with negative mass falls into the black hole before it can annihilate the virtual particle. The virtual particle now escapes with positive mass while the antiparticle with its negative mass reduces the mass of the black hole.

Please discuss or critique.

A great example of balance in the universe. Eventually the black hole gets so small and the radiation/heat generated around the hole causes the black hole to explode and creates a new star. A new star born from the death of the old one.

My understanding of is is...uhm...limited. Pretty sure its gonna earn him a nobel prize though.

I hope so. Both Hawking and Penrose should be in line for the prize for their work on singularity theorems and big bang theory.
