HD Channels on DSTV

But what's the radical under it? I mean most novices would take it for granted that in order to view HD TV channels, one has to have an HD television.

But you don't need an HD TV to view HD channels, you only need an HD decoder so your statement of trying to point out the obvious is in itself stupid.

One would need an HD TV to view HD channels in HD but not simply to view the HD channels.

You must be in pre-novice stage then;)

Exactly, because I can watch the HD channels on my HD tv and the old CRT tv.

Haha maybe. I kno you can view HD material on non-HD displays, but won't be in HD until you get an HD display. Anyways I was hoping you explain exactly why we need an HD PVR. Something along, signals that can't be transmitted to direct HD, without the need to decode them or something. I mean I can download a bluray movie (24GB) and play it on my friend's 24" full HD LCD monitor, or 42" full HD LCD TV, without any other medium (HD PVR).
Excuse my noobiness. Haha.

The reason you need an HD decoder is because it's the only way to receive the HD channels. They're not broadcasted to other decoders. So ja, HD decoder+HD Ready telly=HD viewing;) And remember, the HD content is only broadcast in 720P so no need for a 1080P Plasma/LCD.

Oh ok, I see. That means if I have an SD PVR and an HD TV, and by some chance/mistake managed to view MnetHD, it will still be in SD.

No, if you have an SD decoder channels 170-173 are not even there. They are the HD channels.

If you have an HD decoder and a non HD telly you will view them in SD.

Looks like your location isn't Port 80 it's the Loopback Adapter;)

WRONG. I have an SD decoder, and I'm on DSTV Compact, and the 5 HD channels, 170 is MntHD, 171 is SSHD1, 172 is DisHD, 174 is SSHD2 and 175 is MM1HD - they are there.
If I click on channel 170, I don't get that E16 error message, I can access the channel, and only audio is playing there, not video. So HD channels do appear on SD decoders.
I agree on point two, corresponds with my view, but not 3.

FM, I'm not even going to comment anymore because it's seems like all you're looking for is an argument...

The reason the HD channels don't work on SD decoders is because they don't have the ability to decode HD video, otherwise you would at least be able to watch widescreen

HD channels are in MPEG4 format, SD in MPEG2 format. Only DStv HD decoders can decode MPEG4, so no chance of getting them on the SD decoders.
