I live in a big block of flats, with the normal dstv "port" in the wall (only 1). Obviously it will cost a fortune to upgrade the whole block, so I don't see this happening.

Is there a way to convert just my flat, or will wholesale changes need to be made? I'm facing SW so no change of putting up my own dish.

Anyone had this experience?

Unfortunately it will probably mean wholesale changes to your Block to enable HDTV

It all depends on how the complex is setup. I live in a complex and am using just 1 cable, everything works except the EPG (TV guide, program info bar etc)
But with my complex though that 1 cable comes from transponders and is SD PVR compliant, but if its just a standard single line coming in you should be able to get the channels incl HD but wont be able to record & wont get the EPG

Multichoice havent looked into how complexes should be setup yet, so i would advice would be to get someone to come around with their decoder & test it before forking out

the HD PVr supports ST CRLNB(consult your installer). it is a signle LNB and it will work with your HD. how well? I don't know.

Yes, its a single cable that comes from the SAT CR on the dish, it works for the HD PVR, the only issue with it at the moment is that when the PVR reboots it loses the settings and you have to manually edit them again on the decoder

Sounds helluva complicated. I'm in the market for a full HD LCD now, but if I'm not able to get an HD feed - why bother?

Without the EPG, how do you see what coming on - revert to the internet or go oldschool with the book?

You only need a 720p HDTV to watch DSTV HD.

Buy long term. BluRay DVD will have better quality. I can but a new Sony Bravia S series 40 inch for R11k, so not much more expensive than HD ready 40 inch in stores now.

They use the international HD standard of 720p...

Very few, if ANY broadcasters are using 1080p, it uses too much bandwidth.

Pretty much, I'm just waiting for my lease to end then hopefully move & get my own dish. There are so many issues with the decoder software now anyway, so if i was you i would wait.

Just an added note on the Full HD, general consensus is that the difference between HD ready (720) & Full HD (1080) is only noticeable on screens of 50" +, so unless you are going to sit less then a metre from the TV its a bit of a waste

Well from experience with an HD Decoder and a single cable (non PVR Ready)...

The decoder gets signal and will display the channels, but no record and no EPG... BUT I've found the HD PVR to be considerably more finnicky about signal quality, my old decoder is happiness on 75% quality... my HD PVR does not like anything less than 90% (reason why its now disabled until the installer arrives and realigns my dish properly.)

I'm not using the HDPVR as a guide.. Using the signal meter on my V old decoder which I know is a HELL of alot more accurate

Wait - so my current LCD which is running at 1366×768 is perfect for DSTV-HD? What else do I need to check on the LCD?

O/T: a 2160p TV would be nice :p

Yup, just needs to have an HDMI port & have HDCP (just a copyright thing so it can receive HD content) which means it will be allowed to receive HD content. If you bought it in the last 6 months or so then there shouldnt be any problem at all

So by buying a 40 inch HD ready panel, I'll be saving a couple of thousand rand, with no significant loss of quality?
