HD playback?

Ok, so i have the samsung P2350. Now this monitor supports full HD 1080p, but it does not have a HDMI port, it only has a DVI port. If i had to get a cable from esquire that converts from hdmi to DVI, then would i be able to watch in HD? As my current graphics card (8800GT) supports HDCP, but when i play HD movies i dont get the HD quality.

so to cut a long story short, if i obtained a new graphics card that had a hdmi port, and i purchased that cable form esquire (from hdmi to dvi) would i get the HD quality, or would i also need to get a monitor with the hdmi port?
 
No it would not make a difference.

HDMI carries both sound and graphics - that's all.
DVI just carries the visual (graphics).

I had a Sammy 24" - forget the model no, now - the one with built-in speakers.
8800GT with DVI and got perfect HD - if you feel you're not getting HD - you're not playing .mkv or H.264 files or true HD.

Can you describe the issues you're having because you are watching in HD if you play 1080p movies @ 1080p resolution through DVI.

HD is not just HMDI. You can get HD through VGA, DVI, Component etc as well. It's just a resolution. What do you mean when you say you don't get HD quality?
 
Troubleshooting suggestions:

Check on your monitor if it's set to it's native resolution.
Check in Windows (or whichever OS) or rather on your GPU settings - that your resolution is maxed out to 1920x1080.
 
Under my screen settings it is set as 1080p, 1920 x 1080 (recommended). And under "view HDCP status" it states that my graphics card and display are HDCP capable. I just dont seem to see the quality of the .mkv files i have that are 8GB+ and that are 720p or 1080p. The picture quality doesnt seem to be that of what HD tv's produce.
 
I know what HD looks like as my girlfriend's dad has a full HD 1080p tv so i know what the quality is supposed to look like, but it just doesnt seem the same on my pc.
 
Well it depends on the quality of the encode and the display.

I don't know, generally HD looks stunning on my display...
 
I noticed you have about a 23 inch HD monitor. The difference might not be as noticeable on a smaller screen then compared to a large HD TV. I download a lot of HD content and when I preview it on my 23" desktop screen it looks better then SD but not by a lot. As soon as I play it on my 42"or 60" HDTV's the difference becomes much more obvious.
 
think that it too. you can see so much more depending on the screen size. well, when i look at my 19" monitor to my 42" plasma
 
I also have a Samsung P2350 and get HD playback?

HDMI just means HD Video + HD Audio (don't see what the big fuss is all about)
DVI mean HD Video without HD Audio

well its also depends on the movie's age, old movies can be grainy and the size of the file, i have a 35gb rip of avatar and it looks amazing, try get an HD rip of a recent movie that is 20gb+, then see how it looks
 
how can i get vlc player to play a movie in wide screen?
