I have an HD PVR 2P that I've upgraded to a twin LNB installation. (PVR functionality enabled)

I want to hook up a second TV that can be used to watch a different channel from the first TV.
I dont need to be able to record from the second TV, just watch a different channel.

What is the least requirement in terms of cabling, connections etc that I need to get this working?
Is it possible without XtraView ?

You will need a second decoder e.g. a cheap 1110. You will need to buy a 2 in multi out splitter box - think Ellies sells a kit. You get a 2-in 6-out and 2-in 8-out ones but in your case 2 in 4 out will be enough if such a splitter box exists.

You have to go Xtraview but it won't cost you anything as you are already paying for basic + PVR which is the highest subscription.

Wiring will be 2 into your PVR, one wire to the 1110 and another wire between the 2 decoders for the Xtraview hartbeat. If you make the second decoder also a 2P PVR then you will need 2 wires to go to that - one wire will work but won't give yuo record on the second decoder. You will however have access to the the HD channels with just one wire (plus heartbeat one).

What Boertjie says ^

You'll only find 1131 decoders new though, will get 1110 2nd hand, they're about R500.
2x4 multiswitch R250 / R300

Check out the Xtraview manual on the DSTV forums for settings & different setup options

Thanks guys, I have a 1131 decoder, which I had before the PVR so that's already not a problem. It will just be the multiswitch/splitter I need to get.

One last question. Based on your description above which of the below cabling images would be correct.

OR

the splitter in option 2 does what exactly? model number or internal diagram will help here.

i currently have a 1x2 switch and just brought in the 2nd cable for the PVR directly into the PVR. i am thinking of taking the 2nd o/p from the switch to the 1110 in the bedroom. can i do that and just run the xtraview heartbeat wire between the two decoders?

what type is this heartbeat cable?

Its not a splitter, its a multiswitch. In simple terms it switches polarities when required, a splitter simply splits whatever it gets.
Heartbeat cable is a standard co-axial aerial type cable

@KSINGH, sorry I just used the word splitter in my simple diagrams, it was late and I wasnt thinking.

You do raise a good point though. Can anyone recommend a model/make of the multiswitch to get. I'll probably be going to Zakspeed to get it and it would help to know what to ask for.

Would there be a reason why the guys that setup my dstv made the cheapo decoder the "primary" and my pvr hd "slave"?

The advantage of this is that if you need to take a decoder to a holiday home then its simple
Disadvantage is if stops working or is away the HDPVR won't record or function at all
