HD PVR - a call to action!

I've had my HD PVR for over 14 months now, and not only is the device still buggy (it requires daily reboots:mad:), but some really basic functionality is still missing:confused:. I have both a Tivo and an HD PVR... the picture quality of the HD PVR is much better than the Tivo but:

* The Tivo interface for searching for content is infinitely superior - I don't need to know which channel it's on, or what time, just what the content I want is called. I can always find a show in a couple of seconds - even if it's only going to be on in 2 weeks time.
* The Tivo allows me to pick a program once and then elect to record the entire season
* The Tivo let's me elect to record only new shows if I wish (e.g. TopGear)
* The Tivo remote navigation is simple, intuitive and responsive
* Tivo deletes old content on a FIFO basis (unless you've tagged a specific show as "don't delete") - so I never have to panic about the dreaded "90% full"

I posted a similar message to the above, as well as the text below, on the DSTV forums and it took 2 weeks before a Multichoice representative responded. Here's the rest of my original post:

Please DSTV team - the Tivo software and hardware is almost 10 years old, yet is superior in almost every way to my HD decoder. I would love to stop using the Tivo (I'm hooked on watching shows in HD with 5.1 sound!) but with the current level of functionality I simply can't...

I haven't even mentioned all the bugs - like so many other users my unit hangs at least once a day requiring a 10 second front panel full reboot... this simply isn't acceptable!

PLEASE GIVE ME SOME HOPE!

"MCA itv" (the MC representative that responded) seems like a good guy, but my take is that MC simply isn't feeling like there's a real need to invest in rolling out (really basic!) functionality anytime soon - they simply don't feel a need to spend the money to up-resource their dev team.

Here's the original thread: http://forum.dstv.com/showthread.php?t=4164

And if out haven't done so yet, check out Tivo.

I reckon if we make enough noise MC will wake up and give the dev team some resources!!! :D

The only way to fix a DSTV related problem is to cancel the contract.

I'm getting so despondent.....

DSTV, Cell phones, Eskom, Broadband, Ekurhuleni,

It seems like every time I turn around I get shafted.

Maybe it really is time for a new start in another country...

Daily reboots? Uhm... Seriously? I have not experienced this. Maybe an installation issue. Firmware is not really buggy anymore and the content and functionality is on the way.

Look. DSTV has some issues, but it is not as bad as you guys make it seem.

Aah, a lady, for some reason that possibility hadn't even crossed my mind.

I am serious about the daily reboots - if my wife and I go away for a weekend and set up a few recordings the chances that anything has been recorded on day 2 are virtually zero.

I probably have one of the 1st batch of units sold, and this may be a hardware issue (overheating?) rather than a software glitch, but I am genuinely dissapointed by how slowly new functionality seems to be added to what on paper should be a great platform.

Lol. They have been promising new SD PVR functionality since the 2006 I think. Still nothing of note has been added. Most of the firmware updates are bug fixes that have been introduced by the last version of firmware.

But hey, at least my SD PVR is stable. Thank you Multichoice for giving me a stable product. You deserve a medal for that...

So odd dude...granted...the HD PVR has its bugs....but mine is fine 90% of the time. I reboot it due to hanging / freezing maybe twice a month. Other than that....the bugs dont really get to me that much. My HD PVR has been relatively fine?

I got mine in 2006 I think...

Anyone have any idea when the new HD PVR is being released. I am waiting for a "special introductory price" :D
