Hi

Im sure this has been covered somewhere before, but i`l ask anyway since i cant seem to find it.

Can you somehow copy the movies to PC from a HD PVR? the 160gig hdd is obviously filled quite quickly with HD movies, so i`d like to put them on PC, or if possible put in a bigger hard drive? Has any1 ever done this?

thx :)

Your best bet is a TV/S-Video capture card for the PC and manually recording each movie in real time.

The harddrive is encrypted, so you can't just copy files off it as .avi's for example.

They don't want you to, but can hardly stop you...

My TV has a USB PVR function that allows me to record (in real time though) anything I watch. From DSTV to DVDs, if it shows on the screen, I can record it...

I think that function might have been removed from later TVs, but Gaz's suggestion is effectively the same thing. Good luck:D

oki thx :) will look into doing that. ideally i wana keep em as HD, got a kick ass tv now so want highest res possible.

thx for the advice!

dont know about the multichocie pvr, i have a wharfedale hd pvr and with that you can record hd, then copy it to an external hdd via its usb interface. yes it takes quite a while to copy but ja its possible so i'm sure there must be a way to copy to the hd pvr from mc? does it have a usb interface?

Afaik, the HD PVR has a normal IDE HDD inside. Now if you're willing to void the warrentee on the decoder, you can take the HDD out and hook it up with your PC. Use an app called MediaCoder to remove the encryption from the video files.
And I don't think theres a normal TV Card with an HDMI input, but you can get a DVB-S TV card with an Irdeto2 cam, then you stick in a DSTV smartcard and watch and record directly on the PC in HD.

I would be interested to hear whether this has been successful. AFAIK it's not possible to decode the video. If it were, we would have pirate cards generally available - and we do not.

Your second method should work just fine, so long as the MC card works in the Irdeto CAM then it should be fine.

Nope... That is the reason why they marry the smartcard to decoder it comes with. Just so that it does not work with another CAM.

Have you tried it or are you just quoting MC on the marriage thing?

As a matter of fact, I have. Not in a TV card with a CAM, but in other equipment. I work with this stuff every day.

Have you tried it? You sound like a real expert on this subject.

Has anyone tried this with the newer 500GB decoders?
What file system is on the decoder?

The marriage seems to be confined to DSTV boxes. No, not an expert and not an installer (you?). I find installers seem only to know as much as is necessary to do MC, and not much about how things work, esp in other regions.

Does it do HD?

Unfortunately not.. Currently only the Series 1 Tivo can be hacked to work in ZA, the newer Tivo's still can't be used here..

The Series 1 was released about 10 years ago but is still superior to the DSTV decoder.. I also have a DSTV PVR but still us my tivo and hardly ever touch the dstv remote, all my recordings/watching is done via the Tivo..
