I know there are lots of these threads, but dont like hijacking other peoples threads, so started mine new.

Getting the HD PVR tomorrow. We currently have the old 1110 decoder setup in the lounge to our HD TV, and its also connected to a CRT TV in the bedroom. I called the DSTV installer we normally use, but they have left me a little confused. They said the 1110 can be hooked up for dual view / extra view. I get that, so thats kewl. Told them that I wanted both decoders in lounge and to then use one of those blasters in the bedroom to change channels, so we dont have to run to lounge to change all the time.

1. They said to add the 1110 to the HD PVR, I must get another point installed. This is what I dont get? Surely we already have the extra point installed as we watch DSTV in the bedroom currently on our 1110 decoder, which sits in the lounge? Am I right that we dont need a extra point installed as we already have one?

2. They want to add a twin LNB, and a multiswitch for the HD PVR. Thats fine...but have heard ppl here mention something about not using a switch...to rather run the 4 cables as is in the pvr. Apparently the signal is stronger this way? I searched for more info on this, but couldnt find any. Is what I said right, can someone give more detailed info on this?

Thank you :D

Ok sweet, thanks...will take a read. How much should I be looking at price wise for the Twin LNB, and the Multiswitch. Have the 1110 installed currently, and got quoted just over R1600 to install the HD PVR + add the 1110 decoder extraview. Is the price about right?

If you buy the parts yourself it will cost about R500 for the multiswitch, R300 for the LNB and then you still need a lot of cable too. The price seems fair, maybe check out those DSTV forums.

This thread is also very helpful for anything HDPVR:

Ok, thanks for the info. If the price looks good to you guys, makes me feel a bit better. Just read some horror story about a guy being ripped off on his HD PVR install....really dont wanna be in that boat!

Quick question. We want both decoders setup in the lounge & we want the HD PVR to run on TV in lounge, and we want the extraview channel (from the 1110 decoder) to go to the TV in the bedroom. With extraview...will we be able to watch recorded shows from the PVR on the TV in the bedroom? I wasnt sure as from what i read...the extra channel actually runs off the 1110 decoder?

You can have both decoders running of RF and have a splitter to share the 2 decoders so you would have the option to switch between the 1110 and HD PVR on both TV sets.

He wont need a splitter, the hearbeat cable between the 2 will send the 1110 feed to the HDPVR, and then the RF out feed from the PVR will carry both feeds and go to the room

I agree, R1 600 isnt bad. As gifs said, about R800 for MS & LNB, then an extra cable from the dish to MS, then another 4 or 5 short cables between the MS & decoders & the heartbeat cable. Depending on the length required i would say if you did it yourself you would be looking at around R1 100

Ok great, read through those docs and see how its done, so it wont be a problem. Thanks for the info above guys, really appreciated! No way i will do it myself...Im really clueless with this kinda thing...so will get them to install and do it properly. Picking up the PVR today...cant wait! :)
