I have an old Pace HD PVR. It is always very hot; I assume that means it uses a lot of power, and now that I run everything from a UPS, it probably runs down the batteries unnecessarily.

Does anyone know if the new HD PVRs use less power? I thought of switching to a plain decoder without a hard disk (like OVHD's) but I really need to record programs.

Is there any reason why a PVR needs to get hot? I have an 8 channel CCTV DVR that is isn't the slightest bit warm, and its 2TB hard disk runs 24x7x365.

It's DSTV… it will be on again… and again… and again.

That's a lot less than the old 4p hd pvr sure it was pushing out close to a 100 watts.

I must have the oldest HD PVR - it is burning hot all the time. I was hoping the new ones didn't have this problem.

I don't need to record movies - I need to time shift. I watch programs at 1AM that were on at 8PM.

Is the Explora the only option now? It is big and ugly, but all I'm interested in how long I can run it on batteries. My UPS runs my lights, laptop, TV and hifi for 4 hours. It would be nice if it can run the whole night.

Its maybe a not so pretty decoder, and huge at first, but I can't explain how happy I'm with this purchase a year ago.

Multichoice granted my wish on the wishlist, I can go through the tv guide on my iPad, (while sitting 1460km from home), if I see something I like, then I click, and when getting home, its on my PVR!

Or I watch live MNET or Kyknet on my tab, without my decoder close by, no, Eks moer gelukkig!

Nope you can still get the 2p hdpvr some places

What size battery do you have?

The UPS has 8x 9Ah sealed lead acid batteries (the sort-of standard size). I have to admit I haven't run them down yet, i.e. they last for the 3 hours the power is off for, and run the DSTV PVR, TV, HiFi, PC and the house lights.
