HD PVR - SD use

what is an SD subscription?

Do you not have a PVR at all? (even an SD one)

To rephrase: can the HD PVR be used without an HD subscription to record in SD?

Is the extra R65pm really gonna hurt?
Anyway, the extra R65 is for PVR functions, apparently the premium subs already include HD.

Let's take this one step further, how do I get recorded content off the PVR to play on my iPhone?

You can't for obvious reasons unless you have some elaborate capture hardware/software whereby you can capture the output stream and decode the encryption. As far as I understand the decoder will scramble the signal if it detects a capture device attached to it.

I could be wrong

To make matters worse, Multichoice has recently switched in the "copy once" flag in their signal, rendering HDD recorders practically useless as you can't get your content off the device. I used to convert movies and shows I recorded to watch at my leisure while travelling.

How can this be achieved now?

It would help if you didn't shift the goalposts on your request so drastically.

If you have a capture system that ignores the "copy once" flag then you're hundreds.. if not, then you're SOL.

Any tips on capture systems out there ignoring the "copy once" flag?

I beg to differ on your comment about Macrovision, but it foes not really matter. Also, I would not be asking this community for help if I could find the answers using Google. I don't come here before doing my own research and in this case the Google results were less than helpful.

Further investigation has now let me to the TViX devices. Any experience or knowledge out there re performance, reliability etc.?

With the SD PVR connected directly to a dvd recorder
I'm able to record off the PVR (even get stuff off dstv on demand)

The drawback is that it is in real time. If you cannot record directly then you can also connect via a video machine ie VHS
