Hi guys, I am considering buying one, is it worth the extra money?

Well if you have SD-PVR currently, then not really. (Unless you're DESPERATE for HD content.)

If not, then definitely.

I've currently got nothing, but I would like to buy it now rather than later.

Thanks for the information.

R3k for a handful of HD channels. Admittedly The PVR functionality is REALLY nice, but 3K???? And that excludes any modifications I might have to make to my existing dish (if any). I really wish the SD PVR was still available. If I remember correctly (which I probably don't), it was significantly cheaper than the current one and more reliable from what I've heard.

The SDPVR was roughly the same price as the HDPVR currently is.....

As has been said before though, if you currently have an SDPVR, then nope its not worth it.. if you don't then it DEFINITELY is...

Maybe I'll use my 13th cheque to pick one up at the end of the year. How reliable are the decoders? I've heard stories of some annoying bugs, but this was about a year ago.

had to bump this thread up.
hubby bought the HD PVR in 2008 just before the olympics. had it connected etc and so forth. after about a year it started giving problems and phoned the multi choice call center and was told we had to take it in. they reset the decoder and we lost all the recordings.
after a few months it started giving a blue box at the bottom right hand corner - message was hard disk error. unplugged and reset, everything ok for a week. same thing popped up but couldn't reset. had to take the thing in last night.
as we had taken out insurance when we decided to get the PVR, we were given a 2nd hand "fixed" PVR. first one they bought out didn't work. 2nd one they bought out they battled to get the thing to work but as it was closing time we took it. at 2 a.m. this morning, the thing crashed. i went to switch it back on as i was sitting at my computer surfing the net and wanted to watch american idols results show. the thing was dead.
there were so many of these decoders sent back to be repaired and now they are being replaced when people are bringing their "broken" ones in if they have insurance on them.

thats how multichoice does all thir repairs, you take in your broken 1 they give you a repaired one, take your one repair it and give it to the next guy, they have been doing this since back in the ond mnet decoder days.
If im not mistaken, they should have a few days waranty on the refurmed 1 you got from them, they should swop it out at no cost, did you go to the head office in randburg?

HD PVR gives you view 1 record 2, unless you combine with a 1110 to get back to view 2 record 2 - and there is talk of a replacement decoder for the 1110 as well coming out some time soon.

110 has already been replaced by the horible lookin 1131

The HD decoder is not a replacement for dual view nor is it a replacement for the SD decoder. At the moment all it gives you is the ability to view and record the one HD channel

no you can view 1 chanel and recored (2 at once on the dady pvrs and 1 on the new baby)any of the chanels sd and hd and ther are curentyl about 3 hd chanels.

Is there anything different on the SD channels with HDPVR. E.g. is the screen format the same, still no 16:9 for most of the channels? Anything different in the quality of the SD channels picture?

Special at Hificorp - (old) HD PVR for R1999.

I'm seriously considering it.

Had an HD PVR since Nov 2008, touch wood had no problems with the decoder at all. The SD quality does look a lot better then from my previous 1110 I used to have.
