HI,

My mom is looking at the PVR and im curious if they can run it as SD through normal inputs for the time being?

They need a PVR now and since the old is obsolete, they wanna get the new.

Though you were out to swipe your card, again. Burning a hole in your pocket is it? :p

Can't you go read the About HD on you decoder?

To experience the full magic of HD you require the following:

* HD PVR (connected to the TV via a HDMI cable)
* A Full HD or HD ready TV
* Satellite installation (minimum twin LNB) - Click here for XtraView installation options or check out our Installation FAQs.
* Home Theatre System (optional)

hmm... but nothing about not experiencing HD with an HD PVR.

There we go!

4. Will I be able to watch HD content on my current, non-HD TV?
Yes, however the content will be “downscaled” in resolution and displayed in Standard Definition, ie. the quality will not be the same as if viewed on a HD TV. Please note that without the HD PVR decoder, none of the HD content will be available, regardless of the type of TV you have.

ahhh ... was actually in the car at the time ;) Also why I posted in the wrong section ... oops! And btw it's my mom - not me :)

Thanks though - needed (4)

The most important issue to note is that while the HD PVR will work on a standard def TV, and while it does have superior hardware (bigger hard-drive, better scaler, faster processor etc), the software is way behind the SD PVR. It is unstable, buggy, recordings often get lost, and it lacks many of the features of the SD PVR. What makes up for all of this is the awesome picture quality of the HD channel. The bugs will get fixed with software updates (apparently a big one coming in the next 2 weeks or so). But your folks may end up being disappointed with the buggy software, and not having HD picture quality to make up for it.
