what resolution is a normal dvd player?

-

PAL discs have 576 scanlines
NTSC discs have 480 scanlines

Horizontal resolution is not really fixed, but to compare to HD formats you may see it as:

PAL : 1024 x 576
NTSC : 852 x 480

Some upscaling chips do a very decent job of converting these resolutions to a 720p/1080i/1080p signal ...

1080i

Question?

I'm waiting for my HD ready samsung plasma to come in. Its resolution is 1024x768. Is that only applicable to PC display, and if i go hdmi from the PC, surely it will go to 1080i? I'm a bit concerned now about my choice, just on the resolution side. Will my BR player play at 1024x720 or upscale as i used to on my lcd to 1920x1080i? If the picture is going to be skew, then rather go back to LCD? I downloaded the manual last year, and it says 1368x768 but now the website says 1024x768.

1024x768 is a standard plasma version of 1368x768, the pixels are rectangle & not square like LCDs

In addition to the above, does 1024x768 mean that any and all HD inputs not the native resolution(1366x768;1920x1080i), will be scaled to the native 1024x768?

Don't let resolution be the deciding factor when buying a HDTV. My plasma has a res of 1024x768 and HD looks amazing on it. I wathced the complete series of Band of Brothers in HD two weeks ago and it was like looking through a window at WWII. Even 1080p movies looks better on my HD ready plasma than on my 1080p Samsung monitor.

Penquin, what plasma do you have. Bit worried about the 1024x768 resolution now. Does it screen at 1080i as a HDready screen should? its not going to be used for pc at all, all movies and a little PS3.

Any panel needs to scale any signal to its native resolution to fill the screen. Most 42" HDready plasmas have a native resolution of 1024x768. The pixels themselves on these screens are not square, ie. any DVD, BluRay etc. will look perfect with no skewing. A 4:3 signal will be skewed if displayed fullscreen, just like it would be the case on any 1920x1080 screen.

Ie, don't worry about anything, you will not have any unexpected results.

I think it was said earlier

720p is broadcast quality and 1080p is Full High def

The thing to remember is that if you play a Bluray Disk at 1080p on a HD Ready LCD TV or plasma the picture will be very good but it won't be as good as playing it on an LCD with 1080p native resolution if you see the TV's next to each other you will see the difference straight away.

I play my HD PVR which is at 720p over the Coax to my normal CRT TV so it downscales it to 576p and its like DVD quality and the picture is pritty good but its not HD

Please don't bother buying plasmas that technology is dead the future rests with LCDs they don't burn use less power and are thinner and give a much clearer and crisp picture

Yeah amazing but still not what could have been. Simply not the same.

I have a LG 42PG60 Edge plasma. It accepts all HD resolutions incl. 1080p24 via HDMI and then scales it to the panels native res. Not sure how it does it, but there is no image stretching or anything. If you only going use it for movies and little ps3, you can't go wrong with a HD ready plasma. Also consider the distance you will be watching from.

SD will also look a lot better. I wanted the best of both worlds. My large dvd SD movie collection should look good as well as my future HD (growing quite nicely) collection should look great, and thats exactly what I got.

Ok, excellent, thanks Penquin. Don't know what got into me, i've literally been researching for months, and this whole resolution thing just shook me up. I've paid for the TV, so no going back, is your TV HDready? and looks good? Now can't wait again, shot man.

... yet, most professional reviewers seem to disagree with you.

Plasma is far from dead. LCD have a few advantages over plasma. Picture quality is NOT one of them. For me, picture quality is the most important factor in a panel, so plasma it is. Even the best of the best LCD tv's have a very noticeable colour shift when viewed even a few degrees off angle. That alone is a complete deall breaker for me.

Oh, and I have done the side by side comparison with a BluRay 1080p signal fed to a Samsung 50" FullHD and a Pioneer 50" KURO HDready. The difference in resolution can only be detected on a paused picture at 2.5m or closer. The KURO crapped all over the Sammy as far as picture quality goes, so I ended up paying significantly more for a HD ready panel over a FullHD because the other factors are much more important than resolution.

+1, far from dead technology and +10 for pioneer, -100 for my budget.

You'll will notice it straight away if you are standing there right next to the two TV's. On your couch 2 - 4 meters away it will look identical on anything smaller than 50".

Crappy advice to give someone don't you think? Buyers remorse maybe? The cons of LCD's far outweigh the cons of Plasma. Plasma TV's produced after 2007 use less power than a 72cm tube TV. They don't burn anymore either, unless you are stupid enough to leave a still image onscreen for two days and plasma will have the same clear and crisp if not better picture than LCD's.

Well said, viewing distance is a major influence (or should be) on what to buy. And by the way, i succeeded in getting IR on my LCD. True, it didn't last long, but it was there, clear as anything.
