Yesterday my machine blanked out, it just quit to a black screen i could not ctrl alt del had to turn off and on again and then it came back on to a blank screen and did nothing, i turned off my pc and looked inside, and took my gfx card out and noticed that the metal plate at the back is discoloured with browns and bluey metallic colours and was hot i only bought it two years ago.what bloody next asteroid to the head? my own private tidal wave, howz a blarry break life! one month without something bad happening.

Sounds like it's already burnt out, and not burning out. What cooling do you have in your Pc? Does the card work still?

i have the 4 haf case fans, a coolermaster v8 on the cpu and a 700w psu, the card is working with just browsing the web, but im bung to use it for anything else, which defeats its purpose. i will have to try at some stage arrrggggghh hope i dont damage anything else in the process
edit
in AMD overdrive the idle temp is 40 with the fan on 30% - not manual control, GPU clock is jumping from 157MHz to 850MHz whilst typing this, memory clock is on 300MHz and jumping to 1200MHz and the temp just went up from 40 to 43 degrees

Well it didn't overheat then, looks like it just simply died. :(

Ummm that may also be a psu problem.

What brand is the psu and how old is it?

The discolor,, could you take a pic of it?

Is there dust on the heatsink of the card?

Brown and blue discoloring could be other things, you live in a high humidity area like durban?

The discolor,, could you take a pic of it? not at the moment

Is there dust on the heatsink of the card? - i dont think so, hoovered and blew til it looked clean

- yes in Durbs
ive never seen the outside of the plate that colour before, brown and blue and when i wiped over it came off on my finger
the MHz jumping on the memory clock amd gpu clock that doesn't seem normal either, the only way to find out is too game or do some intensive big file photoshop work, it will more than likely black screen:erm:

Is this the colour?

If its 2 years old make sure there is no dust in the heatsink or anything. I had an 8800GT get to ridiculous temps just because there was dust caking up the fan and heatsink.

Not as cyan_ee it looks more oil based kind of heat burn, but not blackened or burnt, do you remember those marbles, similar to the moonrocks, but had a solid metallic multi colour.

The mhz/frequency jump is normal though, when using something that requires more processing power, it will jump automatically, much like my android cpu or laptop cpu.

Brown and blue sounds like like a reaction of some chemical, maybe a capacitor is leaking and reacted? normally a burn mark would be blackish brown. It sounds more like the metal corroding with the moisture in the air or another external source, a burn mark wouldnt be oily...unless something popped on it.

If its not dead I dont believe it due to overheat, try play a game and record the temp. If dust is clouded on it, even during desktop mode it should be in high 50's
