Hi,

I have a normal IDE 160HGB HDD in an external case, that my girlfriend dropped about a year ago... from about a 1 metre ... onto bricks ... broke the casing ... :(

ANYWAY, HDD seems 100% when I tried and have been using it every few weeks since.

People tell me there may still be physical issues though.

Is there anyway to check with software if all is good ?
 
I would say check for bad sectors - windows scan disk can do this IIRC..

maybe click start > run, and type CHKDSK /r

any weird noises?
 
Its not really the software you must check but the integrity of the plates and hardware status.SO spinrite for that and advanced load testing for 2 hours.Once that is done and it still works regrdless of the software error then you have a good unit there.
 
Put the brandy&coke down Gary, if you thought i was serious then i am worried that you might believe the threads in the Philosophy section :p
 
The best way is to back it up and try to format it in DOS mode.
It will lets you know if it finds bad sectors while formatting.

sorry, but I don't like joking about that. I have several friends who were abused. Not a nice situation at all. :(

Ideally spinrite...but not all people have access to it. Some other things you can do:

Google for software that can read the SMART data...its not all that reliable as a checking method but its worth checking out. Not all HDDs give the option to read it though.

Speedfan can read SMART data off harddrives.

You can also have a look at SeaTools from seagate...that can also test HDDs. Just DONT do the "destructive testing" thing...it overwrites the data on the HDD.

@ dolby ... run seatools, works pretty well, or even spinrite, will tell you if the drive is wacked :)

I had a friend who's husband kicked her in the stomach and she lost her first child. Can't have children anymore. A few years later he hit her in the eye and split her cornea open. she is now blind in that eye. He regularly throws her around the house. It is no laughing matter and any so called "man" who jokes about it is a pathetic animal with no balls. Hitting a woman just proves that you are no better than a dog.

My opinion.. If a woman gets beaten up, the first time it’s his fault, if she’s still there the second time, takes a beating and still does nothing? Well then she is also to blame…

She reported it to the police, but he is friends with everyone at the station. She phoned the protective services, but when it went to court he got his Freemason buddies to squash it. She only finally managed to get a divorce after 14 years... but only because he is with another women. She walks away with nothing. Everything was in his name, and he made it look like he had nothing to share with her. She did not even have money to hire a decent lawyer. The first day of the trial, the judge took didn't even ask her a single question, he awarded everything to the husband. He is a high powered exec in the Casino industry.

Any man who jokes about or gets pleasure from hurting another human being esp. a female or an animal is a sick individual.

I wasn’t making a joke as this is no joking matter, so she had nowhere to go? You would not have taken her in to assist her to get out of the abusive relationship, her parents, her church, nobody? She was unable to physically leave the house? There are a lot of thing I do not know about this person, but I do know that if you decide not to take someone’s **** anymore there are a lot of things you can do, it all depends on the sacrifices you are willing to make.
