OK, I've had my trusty 160GB Seagate for a couple of years now without any major problems but recently it seems to go ballistic for a solid few minutes like it's being stress-tested or something. Now I don't have Vista so it's not the caching feature. Are there any Seagate tools I can use to diagnose/fix the problem?

Buy a copy of spinrite. :)

Software is butt ugly too, it works in DOS if I'm not mistaken ;) It's a cool program, haven't used it before though :p

Software is indeed fugly but ask yourself - do you want something that looks purdy or something that does the job? ;)

bwana, do you think spinrite can be used on a hdd which has Vista? ;)

Bwana, sorry for the double post.

I just read a PC Magazine article which said routine maintenance on a 31GB hdd took 6 hours, is it really that long? I've also got a 160GB Seagate and I don't want to wait until tomorrow, lol :p

I think it depends on how bad the drive is. I fixed a 80gb drive in an hour.

Besides, if that 31GB was irreplaceable then you'd be happy to wait for as long as it took to recover it right? :)

Yip, I'd just like to test my drive, I'll try via USB stick though ;) :D :p
