Are you running Windows XP without any of the 2 service packs installed?

Rightclick in My computer, go to properties, it will say:
Windows XP
Professional or Home
Version 2002

nothing or Service Pack 1 or 2

You need at least Service Pack 1 installed to use your full gigs, pre-service pack Windows XP can't format more than 130GB.

Though I think it can see more than 130GB on a drive formatted in another machine.

Also, update your motherboard BIOS. You need the BIOS able to support 48-bit LBA, as well as XPSP1 or Win2K SP4 (I think).

If you have installed XP using the motherboard manufacturer's drivers (using F6 on the install), that should work too.

I thought about the BIOS and then I thought that since he has a sata capable board, it cant be too old and thus should have a new enough BIOS already on.

But yeah, if the service pack doesn't solve it, then you'll need to update the BIOS.
