Are there anybody good in Ctn. to recover a 1Tb external Iomega drive? I accidentally knocked it over, It makes a humming sound and I can't see it in finder. The data is important.

thanks!

using the correct guys to repair or to restore the drive is gonna set you R5000 back AT LEAST

Check these forums, there is a guy named Southbit in CT that does data recovery, to the extent of switching circuit boards from matching donor drives, etc. www.southbit.co.za is their website.

It's an iOmega enclosure which normally run Seagate drives. Seagates have very, very fragile motor spindles. When they are dropped they often jam, hence the 'buzzing' noise as the motor tries to spin up, but can't. Ideally the best way to recover these is to replace the spindle. There are tools available especially for this, costing over R30,000 just for this specific task. Here's an example: http://www.hddsurgery.com/art.php?id=6

It will most likely need new heads as well if it was dropped. If it was on when it was dropped then there is most likely damage to the platter as well, which throws another big spanner in the works. Dropping a multi-platter Seagate drive is always a very messy business unfortunately. And very expensive.

sjoe! I didn't even drop it, it was standing on it's side and it fell over. But the buzzing sound is like you describe...something is preventing the motor from spinning up. I was actually busy consolidating ALL my work of the past ten years, everything was on that particular HD while I made space on my other resources. Anyway, I'm a photographer, I understand how costly equipment can be. But 5/6k is a lot of money for me, and then I still have to replace the HD to put the recovered data on.

I'll have to hang on to that HD until i can sell something or get money somewhere. I see you're in Cape Town Southbit, can I mail that disk or will it reduce the chance of recovery?
