Hello,

Looking for some recommendations on a new HDD for my laptop.

My laptop started making a clicking noise yesterday. After checking everything I can, muting sound etc...

I think it is my hard drive making noise. I will try and remove it on the weekend and see if the noise stops.

I have a SSD for booting up - this is my data drive.

Looking to replace it with a 1TB or 2TB depending on price. Currently a 1TB.

Laptop: Lenovo Y410P
Part Number: ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB

***Not sure if these will work or any better ones/cost effective ones on the market - recommendations appreciated.
1TB on Takealot - 2TB on Takealot -

***This one is a 7200RPM and I think mine is a 5400RPM - not sure if it will work with my laptop and be a better choice?

Not my picture - from the internet for my laptop.

Not sure why you would want to replace the drive with a mechanical HDD when SSD's are comparable in price and better on your Laptop battery?

Shop around for 1TB -> 2TB SSD's

My OS drive is SSD and my laptop is old. Cannot upgrade to windows 11 either when support ends for windows 10.

So this is more an extension of life scenario...

I understand that the OS drive is a SSD but what I don't understand is why you would look at mechanical drives as a replacement for the current data drive instead of looking at similar sized SSD's as replacement?

Doesn't really matter what you use the data drive for, a SSD is less power hungry than a mechanical drive which means your laptop battery lasts a bit longer + the price difference in SSD vs HDD has decreased significantly - thus I would say look at any 1TB/2TB SSD as a replacement if you can:

1TB HDD Mechanical VS 1TB SSD (just example) VS 2TB SSD (just example)

Thanks bud, will have a look - as for installation/fit - should be same as standard mechanical HDD ?

When you do upgrade your laptop you will waste your previous SSD upgrade since it is the old form SSD and not NVMe which only new laptops have.

Never thought I would see the day that mechanical drives are more expensive that conventional SSDs but here we are it seems, I would suggest just getting a cheap 2TB SSD for the secondary drive, its cheaper than the 2TB hard dribe you posted.
It doesnt have to be fancy like a 870 Evo, and when you upgrade your laptop you can just drop it into a usb 3 enclosure.

Much of a muchness.. To be honest for a SATA SSD i would go for the cheapest as the transfer speeds are all more or less the same.
And yes. As easy as removing the old drive and plug in the new one.

Thanks guys,

Which would be better between these 2? and would I basically remove the old one from the metal carriage/box, replace and reconnect?

other options also welcome, thanks a mil
Wootware as Evetechs return policy is non existant ... and Mushkin is more well known SSD brand

Thanks guys for all the help,

Definitely the HDD, put it in an external case and can hear the click clearly.
Also cannot edit a file this morning, so yeah...

Will have to sort this out chop chop!

Get a 1-2TB SSD on Amazon, will be about the same price as a 1TB HDD locally.
