so i got myself a new 500gb hdd, so after getting the power and sata cable sorted, i installed it (this is my secondry drive)...

...as soon as my pc booted up, the only way i knew that the pc picked up this drive, was that it showed in the icon that shows you have an external drive installed. it didn't show a new drive in my computer.

after some googling, i assigned a drive letter to the new hdd, and the new hdd drive worked like a charm :) (it shows in my computer

but my problem is, it still shows the new hdd in the external drive icon (ie the icon close to the time at the bottom)

i'm running xp sp3, and the new drive is a sata, where the primary is ide

is this normal, or how to fix it

it doesn't mean it's external. Some SATA drives do this. I noticed this on a friend's computer using XP but it appears that it doesn't do that with Vista or Win7. Try updating your motherboard's drivers.

Edit: What drive is it?

updated my mobo drivers and bios - as i thought initially thats why the pc didn't pick up the drive.

its a Seagate 500GB Barracuda 7200.12 SATA300 16MB

That's odd. I'm getting the 1TB version of that drive later today. I'll see if mine does the same (Although I doubt it because I'm using Win7)

I find it weird that Windows O/S's struggle to pick up some newer drives unless you give them drive letters... I had windows INSTALLED on a new SATA hdd and it didn't even come up in windows...

yup, found it weird as well - luckily i remembered sometime back someone mentioned a flash drive not being picked up (although i could not remember how to fix it), i knew what to search for in google...

...so mybroadband forums FTW!
