HDMI cable - video but not audio

I am at my wits end here. I watch shows on my tv using hdmi cable linked to laptop. Sound and video used to work fine. Suddenly I only get video and no sound on tv except on the laptop. Went to all sound settings and the HDMI audio drivers in the playback menu are greyed out and listed as "driver not plugged in" so I can't select them as default. I bought a new cable and have scoured the Internet endlessly none of the solutions work. I have a Dell laptop and am on Windows 7. Anyone have any other ideas?

Sound like a nvidia sound driver that's not installed or something I had a similar issue and just updated my nvidia drivers and all worked

Thanks for the response. If it worked all along then stopped would the reason you stated remain. How do I install these drivers.?

Do you perhaps know what graphics card your laptop has in assuming it does of course?

From experience with my HD5770, Radeon has this issue where sound doesn't work or stops working via HDMI. You have to reinstall the Realtek sound driver.

Pick the High Definition Audio Codecs (Software).

If you have a nvidie gpu then i don't know but it could be the same issue. I'm not sure if the driver is universal like with ATI.
