HDMI-Mini and what it can do?

Okay so here's the big question for all the clued-up techies on the forum. What can I do with my hdmi mini connector on my gtx 460. I know the basics about full hd video and 8 channel audio streaming with hdmi but I would like to know how it all fits together for the average home user. How do you use the functionality, okay the video is quite obvious its the audio that tickles my curiousity. I have a P2770H which supports hdmi and then has a optical out. Can I use my digital speakers with this setup through my graphics card?

Can someone please explain this to dummy over here :erm:
 
More details required. What exact speakers/setup are you talking about?
 
Well if you really wanted to then you could plug the HDMI into the screem, and then the optical from your screen into your Logitechs. But I would much rather just go straight from your motherboards optical out into the speakers. The time HDMI gets useful is in multi input, single output scenarios.

At the moment my motherboard has no optical out's. Was thinking of trying out the hdmi scenario. Will all sound then work via the screen or do you need to watch movies through a spesific app for the audio to be sent through the gfx card's mini-hdmi?
 
Basically you need to tell Windows which audio out to use. So you will see a list somethnig like Speakers, HDMI, <insert mobo sound name> speakers, etc. Then select the HDMI one. Although... IIRC you need to install the proper Nvidia drivers as well for the sound to work over the GPU

Okay. And the 5.1 channel sound for lets say .mkv files, wil this work automaticly or is there settings I need to define? Like spdif passthrough? Or is that only for dvd playback?
