after some thunderstorms, i got stuck with this prob. all worked fine, until power tripped.
thereafter, my hdpvr 2p no longer transmmitted to my sony klv46v550a lcd tv. my ps3 also didnt transmit to my lcd. all connected via hdmi. my tv has 4 hdmi ports, and not one of them wants to recieve signal via hdmi. just a blank screen.
so i reconnected my ps3 via rca cables and viola... it worked (but with crap picture)
took my ps3 too a choma, reconnected via hdmi, and alls good. so ps3 is ok. must be the hdmi ports on my lcd.
my pvr is another story.. hdmi doesnt work either. but if i connect it via rca, i get a message that says something about my "set top box" (or something in that line. also checked for signal.... no signal strengh or quality...
so heres my question...
1. seeing that none of my hdmi ports is working, can they be repaired.. where and est price?
2. how to rectify the pvr top box thingy..
3. can i claim from insurance, even tv is still working, albeit with limitations? even the pv port is working fine.

Any reputable electronics repairer I would imagine but would personally contact Sony SA to find out their recommendations.

Probably take it into a Multichoice branch.

Depends on your policy but there are a few threads on myBB discussing this, quick Google will find them for you.

@stevenV

- Got hold of Sony SA. theyve recommended MasterCare in Cape Town for their LCD TV's repairs. their labour rate is R400/h + R250 assesment fee + Parts :(
- local Multichoice agent is hopeless... they couldnt even fit my initial hdpvr with an extra view... so i'd rather not call on them. other closest agent is also about 80km away... do you think my twin lnb could be toasted?
- will check up on the other threads on the policy thing...

tks for reply though..

I think that if there is a problem with the HDMI its not related to the LNB unless signal from the RCA is nonexistent. On the other hand, because you have no signal (assuming you can get to the menu to see this) then maybe it is fried. I don't think I'm knowledgeable enough but maybe the surge travelled through the coax from the dish and into the TV, frying some of the HDMI components in the TV and decoder. I say this because you seem to be able to connect the decoder and PS3 via RCA. Best thing I can recommend is isolating the problem area (hoping there is only one) by trying other components e.g. LNB, decoder and TV.

Just a couple of things to maybe try for your HDPVR

Switch off the PVR and unplug it, also take out the smart card and reseat it back in again. Then plug the PVR back in and switch it on. You also mentioned in yourpost "that they could not even get your extra view set up" and so I am assuming that you have extra view or have another decoder that could be used for extra view. Maybe try and connect this decoder up (or if it is connected see the quality and strength of the signal through this decoder). You probably will not be able to receive any channels but it should allow you to see the signal strength and quality from the LNB.

Usually appliances are not covered for lightning

Just my two penny's worth

Happened to me a while back. Had to have my Sony TV repaired, new hdmi board came from Dubai, had to get my other 40' LCD repaired & had to have both decoders (HD & SD) replaced by multichoice. Took myself for a massage afterwards with a HAPPY ENDING.
