Hi guys,

In my ignorance I've bought a 6.2CH Sony DDW5500 system to go along with my PS3 slim, which apart from it's lack of a HDMI repeater is quite brilliant.

Unfortunately, I can't get HD sound working through the HDMI cables - and as far as I know I'll have to use HDMI for image only, and then use TOSLINK for audio (which in turn still won't work for truehd streams??)

I really hope I haven't wasted R7000, and would be willing to spend some extra if there is perhaps a way to get HDMI repeating functionality to my setup?

Maybe buy a seperate AMP while keeping the speakers? Or a seperate repeater which plugs into the existing system?

Does anyone have any advice for me please?

Don't know of any 'add-on' that will fix the problem but what's the problem with audio over optical other than no TrueHD?

EDIT: Does that system decode TrueHD?

Yeah, basically any of the advanced audio codecs (now and when/if DTS-MA in the future)from the PS3 require output via HDMI..
Outputting Lossless PCM via optical (such as Tears of the Sun/ BHD etc..) will only give you 2 channel stereo.......but most titles will carry a DD 5.1 mastered at 640kbps..
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that Jazz Showcase disc the only BD to feature a TrueHD soundtrack anyway ?
Fox titles, nearly all, carry DTS-MA tracks, no player or amp on the market can decode this yet, but you will receive the core DTS track at 1.5mbps via optical from the PS3..
TrueHD isn't necessarily limited to HDMI, Toshiba HD-DVDs with 5.1 analog outs and properly updated firmwares currently do this..

I'm just concerned that I won't get surround sound over optical, and want to know if theres a way to get HDMI going..but if surround sound will work over optical then I guess thats OK.

I could be wrong but I do not think there is such a device.
Best bet is to buy a HDMI amp if you truly need HDMI.

Buying an amp that supports repeating will work. I'm not sure how many would process 6.2, but I think a good 5.1 amp is more than sufficient.

toslink or optical cables isnt capable of carrying true HD from source to amp/receiver, only hdmi is. meaning u wont get true HD. had this same issue once.

Correct. Only an issue if you are watching BluRay's though - Normal DVD's & DSTV only broadcasts 5.1 (and DTS on some DVDs) - both of which will work with optical or coaxial cables.
