Hello,

Need some information on how HDMI splitters work specifically with laptops via HDMI port,

  1. Do they allow for different information to be displayed on each screen or is it a mirror?
  2. Which is better passive or active and the difference?
  3. Does the splitter add extra load on laptop CPU or does the slitter do its own processing?

Thanks,

No, its the same image on both outputs
You get switched and non-switched
The switched one allows screens 1 or 2, with a button or slider
The non switch duplicates the image

I've used many of these on CCTV systems. The length of cable is important. A non-powered switch can seldom transmit over 5m

This one is better as its amplified

And 5m is really good, had one stop at 2m

A better quality cable may even do 10m. There are 2 different chipsets in use. But a powered one is good for 30m

Even better is HDMI to LAN using Cat6

But that is not the OP's question

Now, back to Elvis

Sorry to hijack this, but I have a leading question,

I have a laptop with one hdmi output port.
I currently have an external display, but recently was gifted a second display. Is there any way that I can use both displays at once, however displaying different screens (extending the display essentially).
What hardware would I need for this?

What's the make and model number of the laptop? Generally though it's not possible, unless it also has a display port or type C with video out

Lenovo Thinkbook 16 G6
This one?

If it's that one then you could use something like this

But if you open the Lenovo support website and put in your serial number it should give you the exact model. You are looking for Type C with display

On that spec page it's listed as
  • 2x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (support data transfer, Power Delivery 3.0 and DisplayPort 1.4)

Perfect, thanks for your help.

This is listed under Specs when I type my SN in:
1 x USB 3.2 Gen2 Full Function Type-C (USB+DP+PD); TBT 4.0; 1 x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type A; 1xUSB 3.2 Gen1 USB Type-A with AOU

Could I use something like this:
