I am new to the world of connecting surround sound systems.

I have a HDPVR connected via HDMI to TV.

Blu-ray Player connected to TV with HDMI.

At first I used an optical cable to connect the Blu-ray and the PVR, and it worked fine. Then the sound started breaking up, and eventually no sound while using the optical cable. I tried again this morning, and the sound does come through, but breaking up badly.

Then I used component cable to connect the HDPVR and Blu-ray player.

1. Since using the component cable I noticed that the back left and right speaker is not emitting any sound when watching HD channels on TV. Is there a way that I can have surround sound with the component cables?

2. How can I ascertain which one of the three components i.e. HDPVR, optical cable or Blu-ray is the faulty component. There is a “red light” showing on the PVR, and the red light shines through the optical cable.

I would think optical cable is faulty.

Have you connected an RCA to the co-axial on the PVR and the co-axial on the Blu-ray player? Not sure if co-axial is the correct name but it is an orange colour. Should give you 5.1 sound.

What is the Blu-ray player's model?

No 5.1 sound with component cables.

What sound system are you using? You need an AV receiver with HDMI inputs for your PVR and Blu-Ray. Then you will have one HDMI output going to your TV for everything.

Alternately sell your Blu-Ray and get an all in one system that has at least 2 HDMI inputs.

I beg to differ.
In my previous post, I mentioned co-axial plugs which is in fact SPDIF plugs.
Still the orange colour.
Connect using RCA to your Blu-ray player.

There is no co-axial point on the Blu-ray.

It is a Samsung HT-D4500.

Yes I know, I have messed up by buying it but it is not too big a loss since I used my e-bucks.

It seems the Bluu-ray player does have 2 HDMi connections.

Why not connect the HD PVR with HDMi to the player.
Then the player to the TV.
This way you would need to switch on the player everytime but you would get 5.1 sound.

I would say buy a high quality optical.i use mine the same but big difference is I have a amp

There's only one HDMI on the Blu-ray.

I am going to get another optical cable.
