Nice, what camera's do you guys use. Looking to buy one(DSLR). I got about R8700.00 Reccomendations?

Just realised my EXIF was disabled on Flickr for some reason - so you'll now see I use a EOS400D (and a Rebel XTi)

Cool, aren't the 400D and the Rebel XTi the same?
How does it look in comparison to the Sony a100?

Yeah

Dont know - never used the a100 because personally I would only buy a Sony product under extreme duress. I'm pretty sure Wynsam uses it so you could ask him for his impressions.

Feature-wise here is a side-by-side comparison.

Pooky, you need to decide if you're just buying a camera or if you intend to buy more gear, in which case you're buying a system. Check which system gives you everything you want then look at what cameras end up being available.

I don't think there's so much of a difference in image quality in anything produced by the well known brands that you can choose one over the other based on that, unless you're a pro working in a very specific niche. Look at the features of each camera you can afford, do they offer whatever it is you're looking for. Go to a shop and hold them in you hand - does it fit your hand, does it fit your face? This ended up being the biggest deciding factor for me...

Is the bundled lens with the canon 400D good? Can one do macro with that?

No and no. :)

Guess not what you want to hear. Refer to Outdoor Photo on lens selections for 400D or maybe wait for 450D. 400D will however not be be discontinued, so it might drop in price and the extra specs you get with the 450 are not really worth paying extra for. At the expense of being flamed , I would say very few people will see the difference between a 10.2 Mpixel and a 12.2 Mpixel photo.

Problem is I've only got around R8500.00 and I want to do Macro and HDR.

The 18-55mm EF-S lens isnt all that bad and unless you're willing to spend a bit of money the wide-angle is going to come in handy at times . . . but its not a macro lens.

My Sigma 18-300 has a pretty decent macro and it was reasonably priced. As for HDR budget for photomatix - there are various discounts floating around that will save you a few $'s.

The A100 looks very good in comparison to the 400D.

What's great about the Sony/Minolta line is that many lenses are available second hand at really good prices. I build up my system over time at really good prices.

For who? Beginner or advanced?

Side by side

In between. Been using a prosumer cam for ages, at some stage I need to move to DSLR, keep meaning too, but never do. This might be the year.

The Nikon D80 has always been my favourite over the Canon 400D, it felt better to hold. But now the 40D is out and priced similiar to the D80, I'm not sure.

Which prosumer camera have you been using?
