Hi Guys,

I think the head gasket has gone on my Audi 2.4 V6. There is oil in the cooling system, the engine is not overheating tho. Does anybody know of a good (and not too expensive) mechanic near Sonstraal Heights (Cape Gate).

Jeez, there's a German car specialist I used some time back not too far away. But I can't recall the oke's name or business. Will hunt on StreetView and update a bit later.

I had that with my car last year.... it can turn into an expensive fix. I'm hoping for your sake that the head hasn't warped (which requires sanding down, etc).

dont they skim the head regardless to be safe?

I'm not sure. They're supposed to check it for warping. The skimming bit from what I understand, is a rather expensive procedure.

Hmm. My entire blown head gasket quote was R15k.

what car? that sounds excessive

quote i had now on hyundai accent was R4k including engineering of head to replace valve stem seals and also made sure it wasnt a cheap dodgy gasket.

Could have been because it was a Peugeot.... I ended up selling the car as is. Cut my losses and got rid of it.

I've got a good contact in Montague Gardens if you don't come right with something closer. Drop me a PM and I'll send you the details.

It turns out you need to find a mechanic who can identify a problem in the first place. The 3rd mechanic I went to was ADC Belville and it took them about 1 minute to figure out its Automatic transmission fluid in my cooling system! So they are busy taking out the radiator as we speak.

The 1st mechanic is still busy with a quote to replace the gasket and everything else.
The 2nd mechanic said the gasket is gone but it's not really their thing.

Yeah transmission fluid is a different colour to engine oil, if you work with it you should be able to spot the difference.
So there's a leak somewhere in there, which is mainly a labour thing to fix.

Would like to know how this happens as the gearbox & engine are separate self contained units and I'm not aware of gearboxes being cooled?

That's what I thought too, but google seems to say otherwise?

I also wondered, but apparently the radiator has two sections, one section for coolant and one for the transmission fluid (automatic car). Somehow the transmission fluid is going from its section to the coolant section.
