So I dropped my external HDD while it was still on and I have this clicking noise now on the HDD. I know it's pretty grim, so I eventually decided to open up seeing as the drive was bricked either way if I did nothing. I saw that one of the read/write heads are damaged. But the platters look okay.

So my question, where can I find a head stack replacement? I would be able to fit it myself, that's not the issue, but getting my hands on one is. Or where can I find somebody to replace it? I'm not concerned about recovering the data as have backups of the important stuff that I need. The drive is mostly filled with media which I can easily get again. I just want the drive back to be able to use it...

The harddrive: WD My Passport 2 TB USB.

buy the same drive

Thanks, but I'm trying to avoid buying a new HDD. As I said, I'm not concerned with recovering the data, I merely would like to try to get the drive to work again.

If you don't want to recover the data then why bother with fixing it? The only way you can do so is getting the same model drive and removing the parts from there.
Get a new "Internal" drive and place it into the old casing, bobs your uncle

I would just buy a new HDD and scrap the old one.

It is not worth the time, effort and money to repair it.

Well now that you've opened it, presumably in a non clean room/lab environment, who knows what sort of contamination there there could be.

To those in the future, never open a hard drive if the data is important.

Also, that the top platter looks OK does not mean those below are OK too.

I guess you guys are right. I should probably just buy a new HDD. At this point it's just more about trying to see if it's possible, if it's not going to cost an arm and leg. If I do manage to get it fixed it probably won't last long anyways.

The drive was stuffed either way, so I just thought it would be cool if I could get it resurrected. :)
