So I'm looking at getting a pair of proper headphones. Using a cheap Genius pair atm and it just isn't cutting it anymore.

Looking at spending between R500 - R800.

Two that have caught my attention so far are the Corsair HS1 and the Razer Carcharias. Are these any good? Can anyone recommend any others?

Have a look at AKG as well. They are designed by Harmon Kardon. I have these: http://www.digicape.co.za/product.php?parent_id=23&product_id=1622&tem_id=4 AKG K912 wireless set. The sound is amazing and the wireless range is very impressive, get no intereference even if I'm listening through 3 walls at 5m! Also battery life is very impressive, get about 4 hours of continuous listening and my set is quite old.
Build quality is excellent across the range and sound quality is reportedly better than equivalent Seinnheisers.

Some more AKG:

Expansys seems to have the biggest range:

Recently got myself a pair of SONY MDR-v250 DJ Range from Game - R300.

Really impressed with the quality. Had used Sennheiser and was very happy with it until the cable was damaged. Opted for the SONY and they're great!

If it has to have a mic, go Steelseries Siberia v2 or 5Hv2. The former if you are more into music than games.

Then you'll also have to decide if you want a USB type headset. If you don't have a dedicated soundcard, and you are not going to be using the headphones anywhere other than your PC, the USB setup should be a good option. Both the aforementioned have USB variables and they'll still fit into your budget. Personally I'd go Siberia v2, because I'm pretty sure it comes with a 3.5mm as well. However this limits you if you want to be upgrading in the future to a soundcard. The Corsair HS-1 (USB version) received good reviews (Analog version did not) and apparently it's an extremely comfortable headset, while the Charcarias received good reviews when using on a high end sound card.

I had a similar thread not too long ago and I was leaning towards the HS-1, but I decided I don't want to be restricted to the USB only and opted for a pair of Sennheiser HD-555s.

+23 Gazillion: Really nice kit they have ...

Agreed. Look for Sennheiser. They have some decent headphones in that price range. My Sennies were R600, bought them 3 years ago and they haven't given me one bit of trouble. Plus, they sound fantastic.

I personally own the Razer Carcharias gaming headset. They're R545 and really amazing sound wise to me for the price. It also has some really great bass, so watching movies or playing music is easy and not sharp on the ears...
