Hi Guys,

I am looking at getting a new headset for use mostly for FPS games. I am stuck between 2 choices namely, SteelSeries 5H V2 and the Roccat Kave. Both are around the same price range (+- R850). Anyone have any experience or advice on these? The SteelSeries is not surround sound where the Roccat is, but I've heard great things about the SteelSeries.

Thanks

Have you considered the Logitech G35? A little more the R850 but it is one awesome headset.

I have yes, but its a little out of my price range unfortunately.

Razer Carcharias is a very decent headset. had one myself and if you go and read reviews, its an overall great product. i also only used it for FPS games. the mic is a bit soft, but you can always set it louder in Windows. the ear cups cover your ears very well but if you've got huge ears it might not cover properly

best place to read reviews is newegg.com

Fair enough, they are a little over priced when you compare them to others. I know people rave about the Roccat's don't think you will be unhappy. I have heard though that the vibration feature gets irritating.

I have heard some bad stories about the Carcharias. I also looked at them.

Yeah, have to say I've also not heard great things about the Carcharias.

I've had a headset that had the vibrating feature and it wasn't great. I'll have to do a little more research it seems.

Seriously, or is this yet another spam attack?

A good headset is light, does not squeeze your ears, and allows your ears to "breathe".

A good gaming headset also has an attached microphone that points at the mouth, this tiny little bit of information: points at the mouth - is the difference between a headset that you can communicate with using talk-to-activate vs push-to-talk, and in the middle of the action, push-to-talk is simply useless.

Mine cost R60, I got it from Game, it works like a bomb.

I posted my opinion on this before... http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ovie-headset?p=3644260&viewfull=1#post3644260

and as davemc says, talk-to-activate is the easiest, my headset works fine, super clear and very easy to flex the mic wherever you need it. I wear glasses so at times the pressure behind my ears is a little uncomfortable, sometimes a little re-adjustment is needed.

I just want to add, a proper 4 speaker surround sound headset is unbeatable, knowing the elevation of the enemy from the sound it makes is an advantage of note, but they're also heavy and I have not found one where the microphone actually faces the mouth.

The G35 does, I love that mic, it is bendable so you can almost put it in your mouth if you so wished :p

They are a little heavy, but nothing that you don't get used to.

The G35 is like the big daddy of headsets... if you have the cash! But I got two of the Somics for under R700. And I am well pleased with them! Forget about any headset you see in a Super / Hyper market / game / makro / HiFi corp... they all suck.

Yeah, if you are looking for a proper gaming headset, don't waste your cash on a cheapy, go big or go home.

As I always say, if you buy cheap you buy twice.
