Hi there

I have this issue with my steelseries siberia V2. I was watching a movie last night and this morning only the 1 side was working. I tried it on other devices and pcs same issue. Do you guys think i should just get new ones. I watch movies and I connect to asus xonar u1 sound card. I need a headset urgently.

Thanks

Yep, they sound busted. Probably need to get new ones if the warranty's expired. Personally, I'd recommend decent ones as well, not the "gaming" junk.

ok name a few that I can get. BTW it will be connected to a asux xonar u1 sound card

up to about R1K I might pay more if worth it

I'd suggest a Sennheiser HD 555 then, should be about R1500 or thereabouts, can get it for closer to 1k if you shop around, there are a few threads about it.

I've also heard good stuff about the Goldring DR150, you need to import but they're super cheap.

If you prefer closed headphones, there are also a few decent models from Beyerdynamic

Whre can I buy the Sennheisers?

I don't know where you are, I mostly know the shops in and around Pretoria: Sounds Great stocks them, Nu World, Foto Discount World, Cats digital, www.orangemusic.co.za (online shop but they're a bit expensive), www.audiowarehouse.co.za also has a pretty big range of Sennheiser products, although I've never bought from them. And also almost every dedicated audio shop, they're quite common.

There's also the HD558 which is essentially the same thing, only the newer model but that seems to be more expensive.

Edit: Also the HD 380 pro should be around the same price, it's a closed headphone, some people prefer the strong bass and sub-bass but I prefer the better quality and soundstage of the HD 5xx series.

Edit Again: Also, these Audio Technica's are supposed to be really great for the price (R1359 incl delivery from the US), though it will take some time for delivery: http://www.takealot.com/imports/mor...-air-dynamic-audiophile-headphones,b000cms0xu

So do I, trust me proper headphones work a lot better in games as well as for movies/music. I use a Sennheiser HD 598, or the PC350 when I need a microphone. There's just no comparing the Razer/Steelseries/Logitech type stuff to them. Especially if you have a decent soundcard like a Xonar. The surround effects are amazing if you enable Dolby Headphone on the Xonar, you can hear exactly where things are in a game.

Cool man you realy helpfull here. I appreciate it very much. So the thing is the impedance on my xonar u1 is only 32ohms if I remember the specs. I can't get a pci or pci-e sound card cause my 2 graphics cards covers all slots

I stay in Pretoria and what sennheisers will you suggest. PC 350 is R1999

I recently bought the Corsair HS1A Gaming headphones and wow am I pleased with them. The sound is crisp when playing music especially HQ tracks @ 320kbps and FLAC .I got them for R700 at http://www.biosonline.co.za/

I recommend these.

Thanks, but don't just take my word for it, look up some discussions on MyBB we've had about headphones.

I got this from the Asus website (http://www.asus.com/Multimedia/Audio_Cards/Xonar_U1_Audio_Station/#overview)

Xonar U1’s built-in high-fidelity headphone amplifier achieves best listening quality with most stereo headphones (8~150 ohms @ >10mWx2)

The Sennheiser HD 5xx series are all 50 Ohm, so they should work nicely. They were specifically designed for audiophile-level sound quality while being easy to drive. My HD598 even works with cellphones, but sounds much better with the Xonar U3 (same as the U1 basically but smaller) and even better with the Xonar Xense or Essence.

To be honest I wouldn't recommend the PC350 at that price. They do sound good (after some modification I did), but the 555/558 is on a whole other level, and cheaper. You pay a lot for the mic it seems. I'd rather take an HD 558 and buy a cheap clip-on or desktop mic for 100 bucks or so. The only reason I have the PC350 is I got them in a bundle with the sound card. It depends on what your needs are. For best sound quality while not being too expensive, the HD 555 or 558, or the Audio Technica seems to be best, but bear in mind they're all open-backed. They sound better but will bother people around you, if that's an issue. If you want closed headphones that block incoming and outgoing sound, get the HD 380 Pro's. You'll also have more pumping bass, although you won't get that same midrange or massive soundstage and positioning (most important in games IMO). I don't own HD 380 pros but to make matters more complicated, they are like the PC 350 without the microphone, and thus about R700 cheaper..

This is the HD 380 Pro:

and here's the PC350

Edit again: Both are beaten hands-down by the HD555/558 though, in terms of sound quality. Also they're 150 Ohm, so should also work on the U1 in case you're wondering.

See places listed in my post number 10, I also used to live in Pretoria. It seems most places have the 558 as that's the newer model. When I bought, Sounds Great in Menlyn had the best price but if you find it cheaper take the quote/price to them and they'll probably make you a deal.

cool thanks

I have to agree with everything TJ99 says in regards to proper headphones, over headsets. Personally I prefer AKG over Sennies, but that's a personal opinion. :)

In regards to your steelseries headset, it's a very common defect in that model. It's all over the net. So my advice would be to RMA that set, and put the money towards the Sennheisers (won't really find anything that will beat Sennheiser in that price bracket)

Enjoy them!

So i bought the Sennheiser HD 558 and mod them like this

I tested it before and after and man just amazing headset. I now know why they cost @R2K. I tested some battlefield 3 and man I can hear stuff I never heard before.
